IDL Says City Knew Last September of Revised Completion Date for Cameron Street Bridge

Prince George, B.C – IDL, the company with the contract to build the Cameron Street Bridge, has issued a release on what it calls “public confusion” over the time lines of the bridge construction.

“IDL Projects notes that the project timelines have not changed significantly since the City was informed in September 2008 of a completion date of August 2009.
The necessity to complete environmental reviews set the project start up back almost two months from the date originally anticipated. It is our understanding from the City, that start up prior to completion of the reviews would have put federal grant money in jeopardy and thus a July 2009 was indicated.
Over the course of construction in 2008, the need to amend the original environmental permit impacted the project schedule and pushed the expected completion date out to mid-August 2009.
IDL continues to work with the City to ensure the project is completed to the satisfaction of all parties. Budget variances are being discussed as per the construction contract and IDL will let that process unfold.”

IDL is planning a project overview with media and the Mayor later this month. It is interesting to note that the first time there was public talk about the new extended timeline, and cost “variances” was at a meeting of the new Council in December of last year, nearly three months after IDL says it made City Hall aware of the delays.

I've looked in my crystal ball. I can see heads rolling at City Hall over this.

The new Mayor will issue a statement within a few days, proclaiming a witch hunt to ferret out all the nefarious details.

And then some heads will roll.
I think they should stop now while we are ahead....count our blessings that it hasn't cost us a lot more, and figure someting else out.
it has cost a fortune for not much...
okay there is an eysore that is gone...
and another fortune to come and nothing guaranteed..or even ensured...
BC Racer. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The old Cameron St., Bridge was a beauty, and if we didnt have dunderheads running this City they could have repaired this bridge, gave it a new paint job, etc; and it would have been great. In fact it would have some character, which is something that is sadly lacking in this City.

We now have a piece of steel strung across this river, with a design that could have been done by a high school drop out, and it is going to cost us a fortune. Plus the attendent problems of the round about at the North End.

Fools and their money are soon parted, and this is being proven day after day as the City takes our money and spends it on BS projects. It would be a rare day indeed, if anyone at City Hall was ever called on the carpet to accept responsibility for anything. They continually call their failures succcess's so how can they go wrong.

Nice hind site, where were you when we were re-painting and repairing the bridge.

Did you just move here.

The only thing holding the bridge together was paint!!!
Runner46, you are right on. How many millions of dollars were spent over the years to keep that old relic open! And when it was open, it was only for a few months at a time, before it needed more repairs. There were permanent signs at all roads leading to it, that in a split second could be folded down, to warn you that the bridge was closed. That should be a good indicator right there, that it was an on going problem.

I am glad it is gone, and a new one is replacing it. Let's just get it finished A.S.A.P. We need this bridge! Get your heads out of your sand, it is happening, end of story. Next please!!!

one more thing,

BCRacer says "I think they should stop now while we are ahead....count our blessings that it hasn't cost us a lot more, and figure something else out"

So BCRacer, just what is it you want them to do, when you say, "figure something else out"?? Do you want them to spend more money on more studies, to put the bridge somewhere else? Abandon the current project, which we have already spent millions of dollar on?

The "OLD BRIDGE" is gone. R.I.P. I think many people that appose this new bridge, "should figure" something else to whine about!!

Palopu, the eyesore I was refering to is the mess that is there now....
sorry about my poor authorship
I do agree that it is unfortunate that this project is taking longer than originally anticipated; however, it has become clear that there were environmental issues surrounding this delay. My thoughts are that these environmental issues may also have had something to do with the ice jam and so forth. In my opinion it is a good thing that construction was delayed so as to not jeopardize federal grant funds. People in this community are always looking for city money for other projects and jeopardizing the federal grant could have cost the city a whole lot more. It is also somewhat sad to see the old bridge go because it was a part of Prince George history, but soon we will have a safe bridge to travel across and logistics will be improved for many businesses. I feel that everyone needs to be more patient and give consideration to all of cicumstances surrounding this delay.
As usual we have a number of people who are talking through their hats, and have no idea whatsoever what they are talking about.

This bridge was used on a daily basis by both trucks and cars, and if you can beleive the citys numbers it would be 8000 vehicles per day. The vehicles included logging truck, chip trucks, gasoline/diesel tankers, etc; etc; etc;.

I personally used the bridge on a regular basis over a period of 30 years, and the suggestion that it was closed most of the time is totally untrue.

To suggest that repairs were in the millions of dollars just goes to show that people are ill informed. The last major repair that the City decided not to do would have been $750,000.00. R
epairs to the bridge prior to that were much, less, and would have been less still,if the City hand done proper maintenance each year.

Nobodys oppossing the new brige, it is what it is, however it will stand (maybe) for a number of years as a testimony to the lack of concern by the politicians (and some people) for taxpayers dollars.

We are now going to be the proud owners of three bridges across one river within 5 miles of each other with 8 traffic lanes, to service less than 25,000 people.

Only a City and Government who had total disregard for taxpayers dollars would ever allow such a thing to happen. Anyone who thinks this is not excessive is just kidding themselves.

We should have Colin Kinsley and some Provincial Politicians on the Jon Stewart show to explain this, so the whole world can laugh at us...

Those wooden trussed bridges are the uggliest things I have ever seen .... NOT!!!!

The real reason why we got rid of ours is because Quesnel has a longer one and we could not stand the competition we would have to face forever into the future.

Palopu, with all that wisdom, I guess you forget about the MILLION DOLLARS that was spent to give the poor old girl 15 more years of life! Yep, $1,000,000.00 = 15 more years of life. And ever since that bad decision was made, the bridge has gone through numerous repairs, PERIOD! The deck, with that fancy wood from Africa, that coudn't stand up to the cold weather, and on, and on, and on it goes!! THAT IS A FACT Palopu. I have lived here for 57 years, I remember when the old girl was a 2 way bridge. So, don't tell me we haven't spent millions of dollars to keep this bridge open.

You know not what you talk about!! Like I said, get your head out of your sand box!!
Taxinapothole. I have been here a hell of a lot longer than a mere 57 years, so to me you are a junior, and havent a clue what you are talking about. I drove on the bridge when it was a two way, and when the approach on the south side was a level crossing. If one million dollars gave the bridge 15 years of life, we could have spent a few more millions and had another 30 years.

Of course there was lots of maintenance on the bridge. Why wouldnt there be. There is maintenance on every bridge in the world. The fancy wood, was a decision made by the City which was stupid.

Dont forget that the City got the bridge for nothing and part of the deal was they would be responsible for the maintenance.

In any event they could have kept it going, and utilized the John Hart, Bridge, and the Foothills Bridge, and saved us $15 Million dollars. They didnt need a new bridge.

In any event it is now history, and because nobody in the world knows where Prince George is, it is highly unlikely that they will laugh at us.

.
What about the trains?

BC Rail / Now CN, are still using the old bridge?
Oh yes, BC Rail and CN each have a track on each side of the Cameron Street bridge. They used to toot horns at each other as they past in the night. IDL was able to keep the tracks clear during construction, although today we only have CN on the tracks. BC Rail was sold to CN, but lots of people liked having a Choo-Choo train owned by The People of BC, so when the NDP get elected Carol James of the NDP will buy us a Choo-Choo train to run on Cameron Street bridge.

Aw the good ol days....
