Vancouver Olympic committee Boss John Furlong addresses gathering in Prince George
The 2010 Winter Olmpics will bring benfits for all of B.C. That was the message being delivered by Olympic Committee boss John Furlong.
The former Prince George teacher and head of the Recreation Department says every community has its olympic stories to tell, of sons and daughters who trained to realize their dreams, of people who gave their time and effort to volunteer.
He fully beleives there can be spin off benefits to all communities in B.C.
"There is no limit where there is vision." says Furlong. "Already we know there is $77 billion dollars worth of construction planned for Vancouver." He noted that Calgary realized an 18% increase in tourism following the 1988 winter olympics and that works out to about $2 billion dollars a year.
Furlong also talked about showcasing the province, afterall, the Vancouver games will have the largest t.v. audience ever for a winter games, along with the most US television coverage of a winter games.
He applauded Prince George for making plans to head to Torino he called the trip "Brilliant thinking to go there, and a terrific strategy to sell Prince George."
Furlong has been visiting several B.C. communities to, as he says "spread the message that the games are for everyone, and to develop strategy to embrace all communities."
So far, Furlong says that in the communities he has visited, he is "Really beginning to feel like the games mean something to them."
