"There is no limit where there is vision." says Furlong.   "Already  we know there is $77 billion dollars  worth of construction planned for Vancouver."  He noted that Calgary realized  an 18% increase in tourism following the  1988 winter olympics and  that works out to  about $2 billion dollars  a year.

Furlong also talked about showcasing  the province,  afterall, the Vancouver  games will have the largest t.v. audience ever for a winter games, along with the most  US  television coverage of a winter games.

Calgary is the same distance from PG as Vancouver. In addition, Prince George is on one of the suggested tour routes from Calgary to Vancouver.

Did we gain anything from the Calgary Olympics? Did anyone here get excited about the Calgary Olympics? Did our tourism increase as a result of the Calgary Olympics?
All we'll get out of this is the bill for years to come.
I have heard of a few construction projects in Prince George that are extremely short of experienced tradesmen. A lot of these tradesmen went to Alberta, Northern B.C. and Vancouver B.C. because of a shortage of work in this area over the years. These people will not be coming back in the near future, especially those who can work in Vancouver, Whistler, area for the next 5 years. This will have a negative effect on Prince George, and will inhibit growth in this area.
This hole Olympic thing is terrible...

The SOUTH will screw us (again) and we'll have shortages of workers AND tourists won't come here anyway because the ECONOMY is in the toilet and the GOVERNMENT isn't doing nothing to stop it.

Why doesn't COLIN go to the Intermanational Olmypic Committe and demand that we get the olypmics...?
Item in Vancouver Sun Saturday quotes John Furlong as saying the the cost of the Olympics could increase by 50%.

One reason give is that the estimated costs were made in 2002 dollars, without any allowance for inflation etc. (Thats really bright) He now wants the Governments Federal/Provincial to ensure that money based on 2007 dollars will be available.

Sounds like they low balled the original costs to get the venue and now we are starting to see the real cost.

Apparently at the end of the day Victoria will be liable for all costs, and overruns. So we could be stuck for some huge costs.

Funny he didnt mention the projected increase in costs when he was here. Once again we are going to be taken to the cleaners by the *Slick Willies*
