Prince George, B.C. - Starbucks is closing its store in the River Point plaza across from the Superstore in Prince George.
The last day for the coffee outlet will be Friday. The employees may not all be looking for new jobs as some may be absorbed by the other four Starbucks outlets in Prince George. “We have options” said one employee who did not want to be identified.
Opinion 250 has asked Starbucks head office about the status of the other four outlets in Prince George, and received this response:
"In late January, Starbucks announced plans to close 100 international company-operated stores as part of a multi-faceted plan to improve the current state of the business and ensure our long-term viability.
As part of those 100 international closures, approximately 15 company-operated stores across Canada will close in the coming months. The first part of this process took place last month with the notification and closure of two stores in Vancouver. Out of respect and dignity for our partners, and our desire to share this information with affected partners first, details around specific store locations are not being disclosed. Once partner notification is complete, we will make a complete list available.
Starbucks remains focused on ensuring our sustainability and value to customers in Canada and around the globe. We’re proud that our international footprint spans 5,338 stores across 50 countries. We also continue to look for opportunities in communities where we believe Starbucks can be a relevant and positive addition. In fact, in Q1, Starbucks Canada opened 39 net new stores across the country.
The decision to close stores and impact partners is always difficult. We remain committed to treating all partners with respect and dignity and are dedicated to looking for opportunities to place affected partners into available positions at nearby Starbucks stores."
In it’s second quarter financial results released yesterday, the U.S. company said net revenues were $2.3 billion dollars, down $7.6 % and that it had made $120 million dollars in cost reductions, surpassing its target of $100 million for the quarter.
