Prince George, B.C. -   Starbucks is closing its store in the River Point plaza across from the Superstore in Prince George.

The last day for the coffee outlet will be Friday. The employees may not all be looking for new jobs as some may be absorbed by the other four Starbucks outlets in Prince George. “We have options” said one employee who did not want to be identified.

Opinion 250 has asked Starbucks head office about the status of the other four outlets in Prince George,  and  received this response:

"In late January, Starbucks announced plans to close 100 international company-operated stores as part of a multi-faceted plan to improve the current state of the business and ensure our long-term viability.

As part of those 100 international closures, approximately 15 company-operated stores across Canada will close in the coming months. The first part of this process took place last month with the notification and closure of two stores in Vancouver. Out of respect and dignity for our partners, and our desire to share this information with affected partners first, details around specific store locations are not being disclosed. Once partner notification is complete, we will make a complete list available.

Starbucks remains focused on ensuring our sustainability and value to customers in Canada and around the globe.  We’re proud that our international footprint spans 5,338 stores across 50 countries. We also continue to look for opportunities in communities where we believe Starbucks can be a relevant and positive addition. In fact, in Q1, Starbucks Canada opened 39 net new stores across the country.

The decision to close stores and impact partners is always difficult.  We remain committed to treating all partners with respect and dignity and are dedicated to looking for opportunities to place affected partners into available positions at nearby Starbucks stores."

In it’s second quarter financial results released yesterday, the U.S. company said   net revenues were  $2.3 billion dollars,  down $7.6 % and that it had made $120 million dollars  in cost reductions, surpassing its target of $100 million for the quarter.

A large coffee there costs how much? At least 5 bucks. An extra large at TH costs 1.68. Don't see any TH's closing....
I agree, Starbucks is pricey, however the coffee there is certainly different than the coffee at Timmies. I'm a fan of both!
At least there are 4 more stores to get my no foam soy chai latte from ;)
large coffee at starbucks is 1.88 its not that much more...
That's an expensive coffee at TH. Get on at Cafe Voltaire for a $1.00 and 50 cents for a refill, plus wonderful ecclectic surroundings.
Does Cafe Voltaire have a drive thru? JK.
Starbucks is OK, T-Ho's is garbage. T-Ho's success has nothing to do with making good coffee (they don't). It's about lame-asses buying into their rah-rah Canada marketing & corporate image.
Go eat a bush dude, your taste is your own but your opinion on other people is irrelevant or, more accurately: lame ass. I am a rah rah canadian by the way, but i drink Timmy because i like it. Dont call people names, it's childish.
You're right about my insulting peoples taste & I appologize but I stand by my comment about why people drink it.
that plaza is junk. location, location, location! Who wants to orbit the parking lot past 2 sets of lights each way then bash your ride on the speedbumps from hell to get a coffee? I feel sorry for any business in that place.
Where's the point? and where's the river? Why Riverpoint? I too think that strip mall is too hard to get in and out of. Too bad the Starbucks is closing though. Maybe the NHA can lease the building for additional office space eh?
metalman.
I drink Tim's because I like their lattes.
My friends like their coffee. Canadian marketing in no way influences me to buy this product. I could care less. Rah, rah crap is just that, crap. If I was into the rah, rah crap i'd be drinking Starbucks to save the whales, porcupines or what ever. I like Tims because it's affordable, easy to access and available widely. I don't drink it because it's a canadian product. I am an individual with my own preferences based upon what is out there that suits my needs and my whimsy. Apparently a lot of other individuals prefer Tims as well. Go figure.
Cozy in East Side Marios ain't it? I was told that the city would only allow him so many square feet. And when the Husky restaurant in the BC Rail (?) site was rebuilt, the city would not allow them to expand their premises. City Hall knows best. Go figure.
Over 1000 SB stores have closed in the US. Only 2 in Canada. We must have a stronger economy. I miss the Second Cup franchise, which is as big as SB in Ontario.

Vancouver has several "Waves" franchises which do even better than SB.
