Prince George, B.C.- Spring burning is being blamed  for  10  fires in the  Prince George Fire district  in the past three days.

B.C. Forest Service firefighters have extinguished all of the fires  or are in patrol and mop-up.

Conditions this week have remained dry and with minimal precipitation expected for the weekend, and for that reason the Prince George Fire Centre is encouraging residents to exercise extreme caution when engaging in spring grass burning activities.

A burn registration number is required for all burns exceeding 0.2 hectares (more than2,000 square metres) and can be attained free of charge by calling 1-888-797-1717. For further details on safe backyard burning, click here

Escaped grass fires are the most common form of unnecessary, human-caused fires at this time of year.

In British Columbia, the Wildfire Act specifies a person’s legal obligations when using fire on, or within one kilometre of, forest land or grassland. If a grass fire does escape, a person may be responsible for fire suppression costs.

What about when your neighbor in the city starts burning grass on a windy day.
"If a grass fire does escape, a person may be responsible for fire suppression costs."

Another typical toothless tiger statement! How about *a person WILL be held responsible*?

And then, if it does happen make it stick with a hefty fine, without exception!

If it runs away from you and gets your neighbor's property, you could be stuck with a liability lawsuit.

If it kills your neighbor, you could be stuck with a charge of Criminal Negligence Causing Death. This does not in any way negate the aforementioned liability. It's an add-on.

Get a brain and then get a plan. The plan should include "what if".
