Prince George, B.C.-  The BC Cancer Agency and Northern Health will host a community cancer forum in Prince George on Thursday, June 11 at the Ramada Hotel.  Cancer patients and their supporters, as well as interested area residents, are invited to the two part public education event.

The BC Cancer Agency/Northern Health Community Cancer Forum will bring together experts in the oncology field to discuss several issues that affect cancer patients, such as nutrition, family support and cancer survivorship. The HPV vaccine and cervical cancer screening will also be discussed.

Northern Health CEO Cathy Ulrich says the continued dialogue with local patients will help improve the spectrum of cancer services availabel in the north.

“We look forward to our ongoing work with the BC Cancer Agency in further developing services in the North through the Northern Cancer Control Strategy.”

Family and friends are extremely important supports through the entire journey once someone is diagnosed with cancer according to Dr. Susan O'Reilly, Vice President, Cancer Care, BC Cancer Agency.

“Through this forum, cancer patients and their loved ones will learn more about how to better navigate this journey, and also have an opportunity to ask questions about any concerns they have.”

The two-part forum will start in the morning with an interactive cooking class from 8:45 to 11:00am. The session will demonstrate nutritious and simple recipes suitable for cancer patients undergoing treatment, survivors who want to prevent recurrence, and their families.

A two-hour second session will be held in the afternoon, from 4:00 to 6:00pm. Topics to be covered:

· What you need to know about the HPV vaccine and cervical cancer screening
