Prince George, B.C.- Today is the kickoff to a month long event being launched by Participate Prince George. The City Wide Health and Wellness Workplace Challenge aims to raise awareness and increase physical activity in the community by 20% by 2010.
The City says businesses and workplaces can join the Counting Steps Challenge, develop a Health and
Wellness Committee, implement a noon hour walking program, start a bike to work program, or to create
their own month long challenge.
Terri Stewart, Chair of Participate Prince George and Challenge Coordinator, says that “Workplaces are
very important settings in which to promote healthy living and the integration of physical activity in daily
living.”
Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce sick time, boost productivity, increase staff morale, and cut down on turnover. There are also lower costs when it comes to retirement, training, and
orientation.
Teams registered in the challenge will receive the following:
o An Active Communities Workplace Workbook
o A Health and Wellness Journal for employees to track physical activity and healthy eating
o Posters to promote physical activity in the workplace
o Pedometers to count steps
The City of Prince George has also proclaimed June 30th a City Wide Health and Wellness Day.
