Outgoing Trustees, Fred McLeod and Patricia Wick-Thibault, at their last board meeting
As a parting gift to retiring School District 57 Trustees, Fred McLeod and Patricia Wick-Thibault, the board sat for just 30-minutes tonight -- one of the shortest meetings trustees could recall in years.
The meeting opened at 7pm, with the President of the Prince George District Teachers Association, Karen McKay thanking both for their hard work over the years and wishing them well in life beyond school board. Both chose not to run in the municipal election on November 19th.
School Board Chair, Bill Christie, points out that Wick-Thibault was spurred into running for trustee nine years ago over the threatened closure of KGV elementary school and says the issue has come full circle. (The now-closed school is embroiled in controversy as the City's Heritage Commission wants it preserved, while the school district wants to demolish the building as part of replacement plans for Duchess Park Secondary, click here for further details)
Christie says he will miss Wick-Thibault's thoughtful, caring insight. She was presented a framed picture of Kinney Lake in Mount Robson Provincial Park, taken by District 57 Secretary-Treasurer Brian Mix.
As for McLeod, who's served on the Board of Trustees for the past four-and-a-half years, Christie says, "I will miss your expertise, especially around labour issues." He, too, received a framed print from Kinney Lake.
McLeod says many people have said to him it must have been a terrible time to be a trustee with the school closures and huge fiscal challenges, but he says he loved the difficulties and challenges and feels the board maintained integrity throughout and he's proud to have been part of it.
The new board: incumbents Bill Christie, Lyn Hall, and Michelle Marelli, along with four new trustees will be officially sworn in on Tuesday, December 6th at 7pm at the school district office on Ferry Avenue.
