Prince George, B.C. – RCMP say a male lost his life this afternoon when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving on highway 16 eastbound at the Mud River bridge around 1:00 this afternoon.
The vehicle rolled several times.  The deceased was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle, he was ponounced dead at the scene.
RCMP say the victim was alone at the time,  was in his late 20's early 30's, and was a Prince George resident.
North District Sergeant Pat McTiernan says the investigation  is looking to see if speed was a factor in this single vehicle crash.
Further information is not yet available.

So sad! So young! Wearing a seatbelt he might have had a chance to survive the rollovers...by not being thrown from the car...sad!
The YRB staff on site could have used some radios to handle the traffic backlog better.
There were two of them on the detour route using cell phones to communicate when it was ok for the single lane traffic to go through.
It was down to single lane because a chip-truck got too close to the edge of the road and was having some issues with his trailer. I dont think the detour route was passable for two trucks, but that is another story as well.
The lone YRB worker trying to keep control of eastbound traffic was having a tough time. There was too much going on for one person to control, and he didnt seem to have a radio either.

Hopefully they can learn from this tragedy and be better prepared to handle things if the highway is shut down again in the future.

Another tragic lesson that seems to go without notice time and time again is that people need to buckle up. Perhaps this might have turned out differently...
That is the most dangerous corner on that highway because of the speed people get going down the hill before the bridge/corner. You see it all the time there and the shoulder isn't wide enough to save you if you over shoot or need to use some of it. In the winter a truck with a rusty 5th wheel will just get pushed right off that corner the way it sets, and the driver will have no idea until after it happens... had it happen last winter in a snow storm, but saved it just in time. Cars on the other hand just don't know the road and the speed gets them on the off set.
I find it appalling that all some people are worried about after a tragic event like this is the fact that they were inconvenienced by having to go through a detour that was quickly put in place to assist as best as possible at the time. A young man lost his life and all they whine about is how things did not work out how they felt it should, without being in YRB's shoes and knowing all the facts. Well I guess that is all so people have. Complain, complain. Sad really.
Very nicely said, misterman, I couldn't agree more!!
I am sorry if my previous post came across the wrong way misterman. I certainly agree that this was a tragic incident, and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends that will be most affected by this tragedy. It was definitely not all I was worried about.
I truly hope that accidents of this nature do not occur again, but wanted to help ensure that if they do, the crews on the scene are better prepared.
A young man did lose his life, but I cannot comment on anything to do with that, since I was not there and have no knowledge of anything involved.
I understand that the highway must be closed in order for the RCMP to complete a proper and thorough investigation, and have no problems with any of that.
All I had hoped for, was to share a few thoughts that might get passed along to the proper places to help out if possible in the future.
They could have just left the road blocked and waited for the Guardian Angels to arrive.

Very tragic indeed, I don't know if a seatbelt would have made a difference in this case.

My condolences.
The road and bridge should be 'twinned' and concrete barriers placed down the center and along the deepest ditches. That way, when someone is going too fast and loses control they will stay on the road at least. I am not saying that the trgic death of this young man was due to speeding, we don't know why he crashed.
