CNC’s Mackenzie campus saw an 89-per-cent increase in the number of full-time equivalency students (FTEs) in 2008-09, according to the college’s Institutional Research Office.

Audited statistics show enrolment jumped to 170 FTE students in 2008-09 from 90 in 2007-08 and 56 students in 2006-07.

“The sustained economic downturn and indefinite closure of lumber and paper mills are having a dramatic impact on our community,” said CNC Mackenzie regional director Carole L’Herault. “Many long-term employees have opted to upgrade or acquire new skills at CNC.”

Thirteen people have been hired to deal with the increased demand, including: three operational staff, nine part-time and full-time faculty and one administrator.
“We had the capacity to respond and we did,” said L’Herault. “We carried on. It’s been really exceptional – nobody could have forecasted what was going to happen. But I’ve seen a side of resiliency I never thought we’d see.”

Mackenzie Mayor Stephanie Killam says the campus has been a blessing for the community of about 5,000, located 185 km north of Prince George.

Killam said she’s thankful a fair number of people who’ve lost their jobs because of lumber mill curtailments have been able to take advantage of the college’s programs and courses in their own community.
“Education is highly regarded in Mackenzie,” she said. “They are recognizing the opportunity to get some of the skills they didn’t have. It’s certainly made a difference.“It’s helping people to see opportunities for themselves. They just have to reach out and take them.”

There will be a celebration at the Mackenzie Campus this friday from 11:00am - 2:00p.m

If you like to celebrate why don't we Shut down more mills, and put more people out of work then we can celebrate an even higher enrollment rate at these education facilities.

This is ridiculous. I heard some things tonight I never thought I would ever hear happening in any community or in our province for that matter.
Did you know that their are children who are going to school right now that are getting fed by the school PAC committees along with their parents because they do not have the means to feed themselves. Did you know that if it weren't for these wonderful caring people at the schools, these children and their parents would not have anything to eat.

But here we are, proudly celebrating a higher enrollment rate at the CNC....I don't feel very proud right now....How about you????

How many more fammillies and their children have to suffer before we decide we have to change our ways?
The organizations, governments and their corporate supporters including the banks who created this mess should be ashamed of themselves and I hope and completely expect these parties to help alleviate the pain they have caused to so many innocent people

I was totally appalled and completely disgusted to hear tonight what I just shared with you all.

How could we allow something like this to happen....these are our children for crying out loud.

It is with a heavy hear that I have to say that I am totally embarrassed to be a member of this race we call human if this is how we treat each other.
Are we going to celebrate the corresponding 'downturn' in enrollment which is coming? We all know that the vast majority of extra students here are victims of the forest industry's total desertion of our town. They are taking advantage of funding made available by the provincial and federal governments....a limited time offer. Methinks that once the funding dries up, 13 people will be getting pink slips from CNC.
Go ahead and celebrate the accomplishments of the students, but to be celebrating a sliver of a silver lining to this ongoing totally shameful situation caused by greed is inappropriate.
Deadtowne1, "ongoing totally shameful situation caused by greed is inappropriate"

Excuse me, Mackenzie and every other town in this country and world exists because of greed. It is the enterprising people which employs the masses. They risk what they have, to provide services to others, and they employ people in the process. Through this process the success for enterprising people make money in return for what they risk.

if it was not for this system, we would all still be under serfdom. We would be surviving in a log hut, working the fields for the knights and kings. Take a serious look at what we have today, it was because hobbys of ironwork became a livelyhood. It was because the knights and kings could not build their castles, thus they took people from the fields and trained them to be stone masons. soon the master made it a private club, so there childrens did not have to be serfs.

all that we do, is to provide a service for some one else. Don't envy the rich, their lazyness is what drives the economy. Their desire to let someone else cook for them, grow food for them, heat their homes and everything else is what drives the economy.
Hespoke, we are apparently operating on the same wavelength. Love of money is how I describe the culture of greed and sloth.
But is also true that the good life would not be available to us former serfs were it not for that greed.
metalman.
as a former resident of mackenzie there is life after the death of a town but it usually occurs outside of the town go ahead educate yourself but in the end you will move on as i did dont know how long you can make it till ya realize that in the end your gonna move its estimated at best a recovery in forestry in 2 years
Socialism does not work on the long run. Look at Sweden, Russia, China.

Sure social programs are required but not socialism. I don't mind working hard, if there is a minute opportunity to do better than the average working stiff. And the average working stiff, wants a bit more than the useless slough looking for hand outs.
