Prince George, B.C.- The Prince George  Spirit of BC Committee is in line to receive a  $10 thousand dollar grant today from the Vancouver Airport Authority.
Prince George is one of 15 B.C. Communities receiving the grant to produce a 3 minute video that will showcase their particular community. The expectation is that the video will showcase the best of what each community has to offer.
The video will be shown on select video screens throughout the Vancouver International Airport and on line at www.yvrconnections.com , leading up to and during the 2010 Olympics.
The deadline for the production of the video is August 31st.

Don't show our downtown please... parks rivers, university, hiking trails, provincial parks nearby... anything but the downtown....

Lets keep this one positive when forming an outsiders opinion of our city.
Sad isn't it...not all that much to be proud of...
I cannot wait to see that video. If you leave the downtown out, isn't that sort of like lying? If you put it in, we'd be laughed out of the screening room.

Look at the images on the banner headline.

It is easy to make a 3 minute video segment to show PG like you have never seen before.

There was one done just a year or two ago but I cannot locate it on the net anymore. It has Colin in it, so somewhat dated.
Just had a delegation from Ontario come to have a tour of some of our facilities. They looked over the soccer fields, aquatic centre, horse barns & trails in that area, gymnastics building, Kin arenas, CN Centre, skateboard park, baseball fields, outdoor lacrosse rink; then looked up towards the University, and said "oh my God...you guys are SO lucky here...absolutely amazing City". They didn't care that we have a seedy downtown section just like many other places, nor did they care that we have some roads that are worse than others, just like all other cityies. I sometimes think we are our own worst enemies in this City.
PG Girl, has a point. We would be laughed out of the screening room if we video them urinating on a wall, while another is passed out in front of the fifth avenue pub, with a bottle of Calona Red.

We can always send in clips of Mr PG in a tutu. or our Dead tree golf course.

Or take a live action shot of people loosing there front end in one of the potholes.

Yep,,,, kinda been a downer here.
Let's get real, folks. How many have ever seen a promotional video for any community anywhere in the world where the worst part of the community (and they all have such parts, bar none) is highlighted or even shown?.

Sounds like you guys are from another planet.
On the other hand, if national CBC or CTV or Global or CITY wanted to do a report on the homeless situation in BC they would not even bother to spend the money on sending a camera crew any further than Vancouver and East Hastings.

Makes Kelowna, Kamloops, Nanaimo and Prince George downtown scenes look like paradise.
It is refreshing to see that the Kelowana City web site actually has something about their homelessness issues on it.

Since the video is being requested from several other communities in BC, does anyone here really think that they will put film clips of Lawrence Avenue at night onto their promotional video?
Bang on Buzz, we seem to have a lot of complainers around here. Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to appreciate what you have.
YVR....when people are arriving TO Vancouver, are they sitting around watching video screens of what is going on in cities that are not their destination or are they just trying to exit the airport as expediently as possible ?

When people are departing FROM YVR they are not destined for PG they are destined for their home.

I think you guys just bit the carrot.

PG will get nothing from the Olympic$ except a tax bill.
I think you missed the point, if they are already destined for PG, you wouldn't need to advertise PG to them. It would be like a resteraunt running commercials only within their own premises. The idea is to make people aware of PG so they may consider a visit in the future.
Looking back a year or two, methinks that airports here in BC would be very reluctant to post videos on their premises. Especially with RCMP members in them.
Then why hasn't P.G. built something like an IMAX theatre or a massive covered water park or even a giant snow slide. You know to keep the tourists that do DRIVE-ON THROUGH! I've talked with enough Americans, Germans that look around and see NO tourist atractions. BTW I serve these people, and if they wanted to gamble they'd just go home! This town is pathetic, and if any video is produced you will not see anything that is local or recognizable of prince george. Our Mayor's and councellors of now and prior are to blame for not seeing this in our forseeable future. I will continue to be waving our tourists on through till we actually have an attraction that is FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!
I can't believe some of the people here. We get a $10,000 GRANT (free money folks) to use towards promoting our City and you find a way to turn this into a negative? I agree with gus, what planet are some of you people from?

As for the effectiveness of the ads, I can say with certainty (based on the amount of time I've spent in various airports across Canada) that you quite often DO look for things to keep you occuiped while passing the time between flights, etc. You seek out news stands, brochures on various attractions in the region, watch the TV monitors in the waiting areas, etc. In short, you tend to pay attention to almost anything that can help pass the time while you wait to get on your flight.

I think many of the comments on this thread just drive home the fact that some of you need to get out of PG, travel a bit and get the opportunity to make some REAL comparisons between cities instead of just relying perceived differences or what everyone else has told you.
Kudos to Gus & NMG. I agree. An opportunity to showcase what we do have and an opportunity to receive $10,000 to do it and all we get is bitching and belly-aching from the gallery.

Thankfully, they will not be the ones who see the glass half full and will make the video.
Spirit of BC commitee? Ten grand? How do I get involved? There are many good things about PG and that is why I choose to live here. I do my share of bitching too - - it's my duty as a tax-payer.
"How do I get involved?"

Hire a cameraman and go around town saying "here" ... "here" ... "over there" ... "zoom in on that" ... "try this one from here" ......

and send in the snippets .....

Or put them on U-tube .... doing a u-tube standard production might be cool enough to get you the job .....

You know ... you need some of those creative, artistic skills .....

an easy $10,000 to be sure .......
Some butt kisser will get though--not me.
