Current UNBC President, Dr. Charles Jago, will retire from the post in the summer

The University of Northern B.C. has called a news conference for later this morning to name a successor to Dr. Charles Jago.

The newly-named President will be just the fourth in the university's short history atop Cranbrook Hill.

The Founding President, Dr. Geoffrey Weller, was appointed in 1990 -- four years before the university opened -- to oversee site selection, the campus designed and an academic plan drawn up.  Dr. Weller stepped down in 1995 and passed away in Prince George after a short illness in July, 2000 at the age of 58.

During his 10-year tenure at UNBC, Dr. Jago has overseen significant growth and development of the university, including campus expansion, research infrastructure, new degree programs, and the creation of the Northern Medical Program.

This past August, Jago was named a Member of the Order of Canada for his contribution to education over the past 25-years.  In addition to his university duties, Dr. Jago is involved in several local and regional organizations, including Theatre Northwest and the Two Rivers Art Gallery.  He is also a member of the Board of Directors for Initiatives Prince George.

Jago will step down from his position at UNBC in July.
