Radio Rating Credibility

By Ben Meisner

The media have lost their credibility in society,  in many ways as a result of thier own doing.

Last week an ad appeared suggesting that two of the four private stations were number 1 and 2 in the Prince George "central area".

The population of the area in question is listed as 75,571. The River claimed to be number 1, with 24,056 listeners, The Drive number 2 with 18,227, The Wolf with 17,393, and 94X with 15,651 based on the recent BBM survey, all persons 12 plus, Monday thru Sunday 5am to 1am. That adds up to 75,327 or 244 listeners short of the population.

The market share which  they have neglected to mention is as follows, CJCI 28.1%, CKKN ( The River) 27.3%, CIRX (94x)  23.4% and CKDV with 21.2%. That just happens to add up to 100%. Now you might accept that figure except that CBC also subscribes to BBM (Bureau of Broadcast Measurement which conducts the  surveys) and the figures that they were supplied shows them with a 17% share of the audience, up from 14% in the fall of 2008.

You might also want to add the satellite listening, and the other local radio CFIS and CFUR which show up in the BBM survey supplied to CBC as 17% up from 14%.

So what do you believe? Well if you are confused, don’t be surprised. The point in bringing this to your attention is to show just how a little massaging of the figures works to your advantage and if you believe that there are only four stations in the Prince George Central area then the information presented must be true.

The bigger concern however is for those people who know differently and what affect that has on the credibility of the media.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

I'm sure you mean Radio - you are part of the "Media".
Maybe listeners can listen to more than one radio station in a day. Some of the people polled could wake up to CBC, drive to work with drive, hold music is The River, etc..

I would trade CBC radio for the BBC in a heartbeat. CBC radio has a rich and proud tradition of tempting you with some really interesting story, then coming out of left field with three hours of Mongolian throat singing (or equivalent) for your listening pleasure.
Local radio blows. I only listen at work because it's the only realistic option.
ROCK RADIO RULES AND THE RIVER DROOLS!!
Don't you mean 94X is crap but the other 3 or 4 are crappier? No one could seriously consider what those dorks do as "ruling".
I like CFIS. The music is great.Talk shows are pretty interesting too.
IMO 94X is called head banging music. All in all, if it ain't country, it ain't music.

Hey opinionated do you like CFIS? Sheesh

Satelitte radio is the only option.
Is there a link where we could find the actual, not spun, results?
I moved beyond radio for the most part a long time ago... there is so much to download to the iPod, who has time to listen to advertised radio anymore... other than for local news?
I listen to CBC for about 30 minutes in the morning while getting up and I listen to CFIS whenever I drive the car.

Other than that I really do not know all the names that the local stations give to themselves.

When I am in a car in Vancouver, I look for oldies from either side of the border. Don't know what the stations are called and really do not care. I would do really well on a sruvey since I do not know the names of the stations I happen to land on sometimes, even around PG.

The few times I drive to Vancouver I have to bring along CDs to cover the parts of the trip where reception is lousy.

Don't have an iPod, had a Walkman but never really used it. Not into having electronic sounds fed to my ears via earphones.
Give me a good time oldies station. I'm not into country music and can't stand the headbashing screaming and yelling of the newer stuff (must be getting old) We'd listen to CFIS but can't get it in the outskirts of town. I listten to my satelite radio 95% of the time.
