Transitioning Dollars Avalaible to Some Forest Workers

Prince George, B.C.- A program designed to financially assist older workers in transitioning out of the forest sector will be accepting applications  from the  1st of July to the end of August.
Through the Community Development Trust's Transition Assistance program, forest workers aged 60 and older as of Dec. 31, 2009 who meet the program eligibility requirements may be able to access up to $35,000 to transition to retirement or other activities.
 
The Transition Assistance program will be accepting applications from forest workers whose primary occupation for at least the past two years has been directly involved in the harvesting, hauling or primary manufacture of
wood fibre in British Columbia as an employee of a major licensee, contractor, sub-contractor, a processor or as an independent owner/operator.

Seems lika a pretty pale offer when compared with the millions in bonuses execs in failing corporations are getting.
This has nothing to do with the company, the unions or the employees. It is strictly a Provincial Government initiative.

So, we should be thankful that any type of assistance is offered at all. For some, it was the deciding factor whether to pull the pin or not.

This is a good investment in this kind of economic environment IMO... These people are the ones that built this province and for the most part their pensions are a joke. We will lose another generation if jobs are not opening up for the younger generation, and so I think its a good send off opportunity for those that were close to retirement anyways working in a sector that is experiencing the problems we are seeing today in the forest industry.
