Prince George, B.C. - A couple of trees at Veterans Plaza in front of City Hall are getting a new life of sorts.

The two Chinese Elm trees are being removed after an inspection by consultants determined that they were a hazard.  The City incorporated the recommendation into the Plaza planning process.

The City has teamed up with the Prince George Woodturners Guild to make sure that the wood from the two trees can be put to use  The artisans and craftsmen will use the trees to create bowls, vases, and a number of other unique items.

While many of the items will stay with the Woodturners Guild, some of the creations will be given back to the City of Prince George.  The items will be given as gifts to visiting dignitaries.

“The story of a tree can add a lot of significance to our pieces,” says Ken Turner of the Guild. “It conceivable that the pieces the City receives could end up anywhere in the world, which is exciting”.

Good that the wood will be used,
Bad that the city had to get a consultant to tell them what to do. Is it a liability issue? Is that why they need to cover their behinds with the qualifications that an expert brings? I bet that any of the city employee arborists could have told them the same thing.
metalman.
I have the feeling someone was asking for the wood and the city had to find an excuse to curt down the trees and sell it!
I have it on good authority that BCRacer not only races railway engines, but he carves as well and he knows exactly what he is talking about.
"Bad that the city had to get a consultant to tell them what to do"

They did not if someone at city hall had the proper certification. I suspect no one does.
