Prince George, B.C. - The Prince George Hospice Society says expansion work to double the number of beds at its facility is going smoothly.

Executive Director Donalda Carson says construction on the new addition is expected to be complete this month.  The new section will contain all ten of the hospice facility's rooms.  Each of the rooms will have 306 square feet of space, a bathroom, a large window, and will be equipped with a ceiling lift.

Carson says once construction on the new wing is complete, workers will start renovations in the original hospice house building.  The expanded hospice will see the creation of a second lounge, an expanded kitchen and dining room, a meeting room, and more space for storage.

The Hospice Society has raised $1.9 million of the $2.2 million price tag for the expansion.  Carson says there is a campaign in place to raise the final $300,000 needed.

Carson says the development of the Cancer Centre for the North in Prince George will likely result in more northerners using the local hospice for end of life care.

The new addition is slated for completion at the end of July.
