Quesnel, B.C. - Pinnacles Park remains closed as the Conservation Officer Service tries to track down a cougar that attacked a child over the weekend.

CO Michael Krause says the big cat jumped out of a bush near the park Saturday and pounced onto the back of a 7 year old boy as he walked down a trail ahead of his mother and his younger brother.

Krause says the mother ran to the boy and the Cougar took off.  The boy did need some stitches and suffered cuts and scratches to his face, ear, and back.

The Conservation Officer Service brought in team members from Williams Lake, 100 Mile House, Kamloops, and Clearwater equiped with dogs and traps, but they haven't been able to catch the cat.

Krause says the park will likely stay closed until Friday and some traps will stay in place.

The CO Service says cougar attacks on humans are extremely rare.

Again we expand into their home and it is the wild creature that pay with their life.

Maybe zoos and circuses will end up being the last bastion for these creatures survival.

What does the SPCA have to say about destroying wild creatures just because they have no where else to go and are now out of desperation preying on us?
yo loki its in a park maybe you should know facts before saving the planets animals this park is a walk in park nobody is expanding in the area you dont have to be a leaf lickin owl pettin tree huggin enviro warrior to know its not nice when the animals try to eat the kids maybe the cougar should go vegan
Well it's their land.....
Let's hope it never happens to your child Loki. I wouldn't hesitate to shot it.
Loki, Excellent points.
It's their land? They have nowhere else to go? I didn't realize this society is so mis-informed (ignorant of the facts) They have the whole province pretty well. People are a lot more important than cats. You can't move the city so you move the animal--in a truck if necessary.
The trailer park boys had one for a pet so they can't be that bad can they....
The whole province?
Where?
There are few untainted areas in any province and these cats rigorously avoid humans, that is why they are known as "Ghosts of the forest".
my children were always taught that the forest is a dangerous place and that we were visitors to the wild creatures home. Granted, if it were mine or anyone else's child, I would make every effort to protect them before and during an attack like any parent would. Has anyone bothered to let these wild creatures know that they are not supposed to hunt dinner there? That our young are off the menu?

The attitude that we can relocate animals for our convenience is no longer an option. Where do we move them to? The CO service attempts to relocate "problem bears". It does not work because the bears wonder back because they have no where else to go.

Anyone that assumes that there is somewhere else for these animals to go is sadly misinformed or at least oblivious. Look at a map of the province and note any areas without roads, logging, mining, recreation properties or communities. Any areas less than 100 sq km is inadequate. What modern society does not realize is that we cannot densify the wild places. They need large untouched areas to function.

Who made humans more important than all the other creatures? That is a rather arrogant thought. The trouble is that it is the prevailing attitude.
To much bleeding heart here.It is a cat and it is near the city because they like to eat peoples pet cats ,dogs and what have you.I live in a rural area and one day the pets of this little town started going missing.Turns out it was a cougar killing them off. They had a warning out so everyone had to drive their children to school. Now there is nothing but miles of greenbelt with no humans all around us so why would they be here.Because they are predators and it is easy pickins plain and simple and kids are an easy target.
In many cases the animal has hard a hard time finding food in the regular manner. It could be sick, injured, weak, undersized or underdeveloped. It could be chased out of territory claimed by other cats due to it's size, it may be just unable to hold a territory of it's own.

Remember about survival of the fittest ? Some of the animals are not fit enough to survive, and when faced with perishing they pull out all the stops in order to fight for survival.
