Fire Crews Taking Advantage of Wet Weather
By 250 News
Prince George, B.C. - The Prince George Fire Centre says wet weather has cut down fire activity during a typically busy time of the season.
Crews have responded to just three wildfires in the last week. All three of the fires were sparked by lightning and Fire Information Officer Jillian Chimko says all of them were under one hectare in size. One of the fires remains in the patrol stage.
Chimko says firefighters have been using the slowdown to enhance their skill set. Some crew members are taking a danger tree refresher course, which helps them assess trees in a wildfire site for safety. Others are honing their falling skills to help them cut down trees safely.
The weather is expected to remain warm and wet throughout the weekend. Officials say that should help keep the fire danger rating in the PG Fire Information Centre area low to very low.
However, the fire centre says it only takes a few days of warm, dry weather to bring the fire danger rating back up again.
The PG Fire Centre is asking people to remain vigilant over the next two months.
