Prince George, B.C. - Communication Energy and Paperworkers Union President Dave Coles made a stop in Prince George today.  The union boss says he's on a national tour this summer trying to drive home to people just how serious the condition of the ailing forest sector is.

Coles says the Harper Government is finally starting to get the message about how badly the Canadian forest industry is suffering.  He credits the conservatives with going ahead with a billion dollar program to offset the American black liquor subsidy, but he says more must be done to help Canadian sector compete.

"They must provide a level playing field to the American subsidy for the production of black liquor.  Secondly, our demand is that the federal government supply loan guarantees at commercial rates so that forest companies can finance their debt, reinvest, and finally, the federal government has to find a solution for the unfunded pension liabilities of many of the forest companies who are now in bankruptcy protection."

Coles also took shots at the Campbell Government during his visit, saying the Liberals have cut the connection between trees and jobs.

"When the Liberal Government disconnected it, the result is what happens here: high unemployment, increasing unemployment, the logs being taken out of the community or not being utilized.  So I think that this government needs to review how it manages its forests so it's in the best interest of the people in the north.  Don't forget, the trees keep growing and they're ours. It's not private lands.  It's land that is owned by you and I and it should be properly utilized.

Coles stopped to visit union officials and media while in Prince George today.

Wonder how much the "national tour" is costing its union members?
Wonder how much Harpers photo-ops at the G8 cost taxpayers? Harpers foot in mouth-priceless!
Maybe Coles should round up some of his buddies, they can all put their money in the pot, form a company, get some timber rights, and show us all how it should be done.

I suspect they would go broke in the blink of an eye. Its easy to critize, however it is another story all to-gether when you have to do the job your self.

Contrary to what Coles would have you beleive his demands to the Federal Government, is in fact a demand to taxpayers. Who does he think will pay for all these loan gaurantees, etc;

Does he seriously beleive that the taxpayers in Canada should shell out big bucks to Corporations, so that Unions can keep their high paying jobs.

What about all the effected workers outside the forest industry. Where do they line up to get this free money.
The following is taken from an article titled "How Herbert Hoover Put the “Great” in Great Depression"

Rothbard believes (as do I) that the severity of a depression is directly proportional to the amount of government intervention directed at “fixing things.” He contrasts America’s depression of 1920, which lasted less than a year, with the Great Depression, which just about dragged out into World War II.

America used to have depressions all the time. The 19th century and early 20th century were peppered with them. They were always short and sweet, because the US government was not yet large or powerful enough to really do anything about them. So the panics would come and quickly pass…excesses would be removed from the system…and the path would be clear for the next economic upturn.

The last time the US government pursued a mostly laissez-faire policy in handling a recession/depression was 1920-1921. Warren Harding was president - so it’s not hard to imagine he had a difficult time keeping his hands off the levers, because Harding was widely regarded as one of the least qualified presidents in American history. He’s the guy who Republicans believed just looked like a president – so they dressed him up, and sure enough, he was eventually elected into office.

Ironically, the man Harding appointed as Secretary of Commerce in March 1921 was none other than Herbert Hoover, who only accepted the position on the condition he’d be able to meddle in government economic policy. So Hoover quickly set to work in 1921 by mapping out boneheaded designs for public works projects and other central planning types of activities.

Fortunately for the US, the depression ended before Hoover was able enact any of his programs. But the stage was set for the big dance, coming up at the end of the decade.

When the stock market crashed on October 24, 1929, Hoover kicked into gear right away and started “doing stuff”. He ignored the laissez-faire advice of his Secretary of Treasury Andrew Mellon, who said:

"Liquidate labor, liquidate stocks, liquidate the farmers, liquidate real estate. It will purge the rottenness out of the system. High costs of living and high living will come down. People will work harder, live a more moral life. Values will be adjusted, and enterprising people will pick up from less competent people."

Great post Charles. I like that Andrew Mellons thinking. Unfortunately we already spent billions bailing out the people that brought us into this recession.

I think Mellon would agree that the only business government has is to regulate a rules based financial market, and create the foundation for cash flow turn over in the economy... letting the free enterprise system take advantage of opportunities and suffer the consequences of failure.

Bailouts, corporate welfare, and managing asset bubbles through monetary policy have no place in an ethical and truly capitalist economy. These are the tools of banksters and multinational corporate monopolists that pry on the wealth of society. I actually liked what the Pope had to say about this the other day... normally he is on the moon as far as I'm concerned, but he made more sense than anyone else I've heard on the subject so far... which is very weird.
If everybody just sits back and let the Liberal govt cut the connection between trees and job this province will not survive thanks dave you doing a great job
