"It's quite an alarming rate, fairly high for a weekend here (Prince George) and we want people to be aware there are other options to hopping in their vehicles and driving home."

That's RCMP Staff-Sergeant Doug Aird commenting on the first Counter-Attack campaign of the the Christmas season.  Aird says between Friday evening and early this morning, officers with the City Detachment laid seven charges of impaired driving and handed out twelve 24-hour suspensions.

Aird points out those statistics don't reflect the weekend total, as a number of charges and prohibitions were also handed out by the traffic enforcement teams based out of the North District Detachment.

Is it discouraging that some local drivers seem to be missing the "don't drink and drive message"?  "It is somewhat," says Aird, "We'd really like to, hopefully, put an end to this.  Counter-Attacks will be continuing throught the Christmas season, they'll be increasing, and just let those that want to drink and drive be aware they'll be checked and stopped."

Cogratulations to the RCMP. The potential outcome form driving when drunk or shooting someone with a gun is the same -- people die.
Both actions require a prior choice; therefore, why is the penelty not the same?
Their not "missing" the message, they just don't care.It won't stop until there are harsher penalties for this infraction.People won't spend the $$ on a taxi because ..hey,thats a couple more beer I can buy.Until something happens to them they won't change their attitude toward drinking and driving. It's the same with seatbelts, driving for winter conditions and using cell phones while driving.Winter and the holiday season are upon us,smarten up people!!
Next time someone cuts you off by swerving into your lane ahead of you check to see if he/she is on the cellphone! Not only does that distract drivers but they don't have a free hand to activate the turn signal lever!

A lane change without signalling is cause for a 3 point ticket, as is following too closely!

4 out of 5 drivers that are on the cellphone are female, according to my observations.
I think the penalty is more severe for drunk driving than shooting someone isn't it?
Also--when you're shooting a gun, you have a way better chance of a kill than aiming a vehicle. Very poor analogy Norm.
Perhaps we need to adopt drunk driving laws like many European countries do. Sweden has a limit of .02. People there just don't drink and drive.
