Prince George, B.C. – SureSpan Construction has been awarded the contract for the construction of a pre cast concrete bridge at McMillan Creek. SureSpan’s bid was $1.24 million dollars. The City had set aside $1.5 million for the project.
Construction is expected to take 10 weeks and one lane on P.G. Pulpmill Road will be open at all times.
The existing metal culverts had reached the end of their life as they were 46 years old, and sink holes had developed on P.G. Pulpmill Road because of their deteriorating condition. The problems with the culverts were not discovered until after the construction of the Cameron Street Bridge was underway so the two projects could not be tied together.
The project will include a 2.5 meter wide pedestrian underpass.

What is wrong with simply replacing the metal culverts? The city could save a cool million bucks right here. Someone at city hall has champagne tastes, while the rest of us are on a beer budget.
I'm thinking this is going to be the same type of project that was recently done at the Vanderhoof scales... sure takes a long time to do, but at least the road stays open I guess....
Herbster..
Fish stream..Here a bridge i the best case to protect and restore the original stream bed. Pretty much due to how close the site is to the river.
I think that the fish can figure out how to swim through a culvert, they should have replaced the culverts. 46 years for the original galvanized pipes is excellent service for the money, and if they used poly culverts for the replacements, they would last even longer.
Really, a large diameter culvert, with a gravel bed inside, whats the difference to the fish? Waste of money.
metalman.
Pedestrian underpass? Is is that crowded down there or is it part of the heritage trails?
I suspect that this Bridge ties in with the Roundabout, and the cost for both will come out of our road budget. If they put this work under the bridge budget, then the cost of the Cameron St., Bridge would increase by a further $2 to $3 Million dollars. The City is already over budget on this bridge, and will have to find the money somewhere, so they certainly dont want to add any more costs.

This looks like another example of creative accounting. Since some of the bridge money is now coming out of our road budget, we can expect to continue to have pothole problems, because of a money shortage for road rehabilitation.

Not being aware that some work needed to be done because the culvert was 46 years old sounds pretty lame to me. They were certainly aware of how old the bridge was, how old the cement piers were, how rotten some of the wooden beams were, however they seem to have a blind spot when it came to the culvert.

Not only that, but it seems the bridge will continue to be closed until the Mcmillan Creek project is complete. This will put us over 4 years since the City closed the original bridge.

People of course will give the City Kudos for building a new bridge, once the dust settles, and there will be a ribbon cutting, photo op, etc;, however the fact of the matter is, this whole project has been a discrace from the get go, and the sooner its put to rest the better.

Hopefully the roundabout can handle the traffic, if it cant, and we have created a huge traffic problem, at the North end of the bridge, then someone should be fired.

I think it is a pretty good deal for the city. I do believe the real budget for the whole thing was over 2.4 million. Thus there is a bit of a saving, meaning that they will likely be able to do some other things.

We need a bridge, not another culvert, this new bridge allows for a underpass for pedestrians. This is a part of a much bigger plan for McMillan Creek Park. Keep making our city pedestrian freindly. Keep up the good work.
what bigger plan for McMillan Creek Park?
City hall does strategic planning?
Here I thought city hall was only reactionary rather than proactionary. It is a great idea, but I have never heard anything about improving access to Macmillan park or even making the Hart more pedestrian friendly. At least they painted bike lanes on some of the hart highway.
