July 2009 Third Warmest July on Record

Prince George, B.C.- July of 2009  will  go into the weather history books as the 3rd warmest July on record.

Environment Canada's Jim Steele says while he is wrapping up the month using  forecasted temps for today,  it still looks like July will finish  much  drier, and hotter than normal.

Here is  his full monthly report:

July  2009   Hot would be the first choice to describe the month. It was however not all roses with a typical start to the month for the first week, then the heavens opened up with a cool unsettled period between the 6th and the 9th. Temperatures only managed to climb into the mid teens on the 7th, the coolest daytime high for the month. Precipitation was also abundant in this period with 32.0 mm out of the monthly total 41.3 mm being recorded.
Summer arrived with bells on beginning on the 10th with above normal temperatures showing up. This turned into a very hot and dry period commencing on the 25th and persisting to the end of the month with daytime highs equal to or exceeding 30 degrees each day.
In the end the month was the 3rd warmest July on record with records dating back to the 1940’s. Precipitation came in below normal with a very dry last half of the month.

  • Average daily high of 25.4 was well above the normal of 22.1 degrees C.
  • Average daily low of 10.1 was above the normal of 8.8 degrees C. 
  • Mean temperature of 17.8 was well above the normal 15.5 degrees C.
  • Warmest Day on the 27th with a maximum temperature of 32.5 degrees
  • Coolest day on the 2nd with an overnight minimum of 3.3 degrees
 
  • Note mean monthly temperature of 17.8 degrees is the 3rd warmest July on record.
  • Number of Days with maximum temperatures >=30 degrees 7 days Normal 1 day
  • Consecutive days with Maximum temperature >=30 degrees 7 – New record, previously 5 days on 2 occasions; 1981 Aug 7 (Friday) to Aug 11 (Tuesday) and 1979 Jul 16 (Monday) to 1979 Jul 20 (Friday)
 
Precipitation
  • Total precipitation of 41.3 mm was below the normal of 63.5 mm.  
  • Measurable precipitation on 9 days below the normal of 14 days
  • Greatest rainfall one day 17.2 mm on the 7th
