It was on this day, 16-years ago, that Mark Lepine stormed into an engineering class at l'Ecole Ploytechnique in Montreal and, armed with a semi-automatic rifle killed six female students.  He moved on to other parts of the school killing seven other women, before turning the gun on himself.

December 6th has been declared a "National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women".  The 6th annual ceremony to mark the day at the University of Northern B.C. will go later this morning.

Coordinator of the Northern Women's Centre at UNBC, Sarah Boyd-Noel explains, "We need to consider the impact that violence against women has in our community and take action on what we can all do as preventative measures to decrease the likelihood of violence."

The ceremony begins at 11:45 this morning in the Winter Garden (to the right) and will feature speakers, poets, musicians and theatrical performances, that, Boyd-Noel says, will be used to spotlight gender-based violence in our community and country.

The event runs until 1:15pm.
