WILLIAMS LAKE- Lightning throughout the Cariboo Fire centre is responsible for starting 40 new fires since Thursday.

The largest of these fires is burning in the Heckman Pass area.  Estimated at 650 hectares, this fire is being actioned by firefighters, air tankers and helicopters.  Structural Protection Units are en route as a precautionary measure to protect any nearby structures from falling embers.  There are also fallers and danger tree assessors on site who will be falling any hazardous trees in close proximity to the highway.  The fire is burning on both sides of highway 20 and the road will be closed intermittently for the next five days.  For more information on road closures please visit www.drivebc.ca

Firefighting crews managed to build guards around 100 percent of two lightning caused fires last night.  The first, eight kilometres east of Sugarloaf Mountain is currently estimated to be 105 hectares and the second, estimated at 50 hectares, is one kilometre south of the Chilcotin River in Alexis Creek.  Neither of these fires is currently threatening structures.

There are two fires of note burning within provincial parks.  In Ts’yl-os Park west of Chilko Lake, there is a 100 hectare fire, and in Itcha Ilgachuz Park near Corkscrew Basin there is a 350 hectare fire.  These fires do not pose a threat to any structures or communities.

Finally there is a 40 hectare fire which is burning at Choelquoit Lake.  This lightning- caused fire is 100 percent contained and in the mop-up stage.
