Prince George, B.C.- There are only two weeks left before the Service Canada Centre for Youth closes its doors for another summer.
This has been a very challenging year for the Centre. Plenty of youth, and not as many job opportunities. They have had 205 students signed up in the casual labour program with just 160 last year.
They have helped 529 students so far with job searching compared to 395 last summer.
They have helped 529 students so far with job searching compared to 395 last summer.
There were 190 job vacancies to fill this year compared to just over 500 last “We knew it was going to be a difficult year” says Kyle Flannagan, Youth Service Officer.
Flannagan says the focus for the final couple of weeks will be on casual labour. “This has been a difficult summer, and casual labour really helps, especially with the mills shut down.”
With more students than jobs available, the Centre has helped many to sharpen their resume or hone their job search skills.
The bright spot has been that wages have held steady from last year’s $10 to $15 dollar an hour range.
With the final push on for casual positions, Kyle says anyone who wants to list a job can do so by contacting 250-561-5200 extension 329.
The Service Canada Centre for Youth (at 1363 4th Avenue) closes on August 19th.
