Cameron St Bridge Should Be Named Screw Up

By Ben Meisner

The opening of the Cameron St Bridge will finally put to an end the political bickering that has gone on around the bridge.

Let’s get one thing straight, the bridge is needed, perhaps not for the people who live in College Heights or out west but for those who work or need to access the down town, the closing of the bridge has dealt a heavy blow to them, and their survival has been remarkable.

We started off by telling the people of the city that this new, wood from Africa or some foreign country was going to give the bridge and extra 40 years of life... wrong, it didn’t last three years. We also agreed to take the bridge back from the province for a buck, given that it was originally the only route out of the city to the north and much of the city had been built to flow into it, it was a stupid move.

But stupid doesn’t end there. We did a number of studies that suggested a bridge worth 20-25 million would fit the bill; of course no one was prepared to say at the time, that the old bridge could be re built for a fraction of that cost. The two lane structure which was finally built was buried in the files, until so much hell was raised that it finally saw the light of day.

Then there was the Colin Kinsley- Dan Rogers election battle over the bridge. That effectively held it up for yet another year.

No the new bridge should be christened, “Screw Up”, that would be more appropriate.

I'm Meisner and that's one man's opinion.

I think they should call it the 'eric IDLe bridge' This comedy show is far from over.
The bridge looks great!!! The round-a-bout at the north end????????? Well I quess we will see. It is a lousy excuse for a traffic circle. It was a good idea, but executed very poorly. ICBC claims center, get ready....lol
Although I am strongly in favour of roundabouts in place of traffic lights, I think that this one is a tad narrow. No problem in the snow free months, but I foresee a lot of curbing and flagstones torn up by the middle of February 2010.
Between the road graders and the loaders, the snow/ice removal process will inevitably cause damage. Perhaps a wider flat area would have been better, time will tell.
metalman.
I also think traffic circles are far better than traffic lights!! But this one, isn't even big enough to rate better than the one at the Casino! It is a joke, plain and simple! Once again, Pig Gorge gets a second rate finish on this much needed bridge!!

City council, to become within budget, gives us a bridge at a certain $9 million dollar value! We are a little pissed at this price, but we will live with it, because we really need to get across the river at this point.

Now we have a traffic circle coming into the extended plans, not in the original bridge budget!! Well lets cut back, make it smaller, and the people will get use to it! They won't even notice how much extra money we have spent on the round about!

And now, at an additional million bucks, we have to replace the culvert for McMillan Creek,.

It just never stops with these clowns, DOES IT????

FIX OUR ROADS PROPERLY DAN ROGERS!!!!!
Does anyone know when the bridge is supposed to open? I think it will get used a lot more than most people think, but I could be wrong.
The problem I see with the roundabout is that truckers will not obey the yield rules.
Imorge, I don't think the truckers will be the problem!! It will be the people that don't know the difference between merge, yield and STOP, end of story. The circle is way too tight, and it going to be a BIG problem! But may the cards lay where they fall Prince George City Council.

Another, run out of steam before you get to the finish line in one piece Prince George. Could this City ever do anything top notch???? I think not.

And yes mr.pg, I am moving, at my own pace!!!
The Bridge will open officially at 10AM August 24th. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Rodgers, Hills, Bond, et, al; This will take place at the South end of the bridge. I think they are steering clear of the North End.

The whole bridge concept has been a drain on taxpayers from the get go, however the dirty deed is done, and we will have to live with the results.

I suspect that the traffic problems at the North end of the bridge at the rounda-bout will be sufficient to delay traffic, and send most of the passenger vehicle traffic back to Hiway 97 and 5th avenue, which will take some pressure off the roundabout, however it defeats the purpose of building the bridge in the first place. No matter how you look at it this roundabout has defeated the whole purpose of the excercise.

The other thing that will not take place is the Citys projection of an increase in traffic from 8000 vehicles per day to 14000. Where do they think this traffic is going to come from? Mars?. Winton Global has closed down after the bridge was started. The CN Intermodal Terminal that was going to create all kinds of traffic never got off the ground, and I doubt if they have 5 or 6 trucks per day. The bulk fuel station on the North Side of River Road closed down because of the flood and will not be re-opened. Other Industries on River Road are hanging on by the fingernails, and could go belly up at any time.

Therefore there will be no increase in traffic, however this doesnt stop the City from putting in $8 Million in improvements on River Road.

So we went from a $750,000.00 repair job to the Old Cameron St., Bridge. Took a heritage bridge and threw it in the dump. (Not unusual in this town) Built a new bridge, $9.5 Million or more. A roundabout, $2.5Million? and a bridge over McMillan Creek $2.5 Million? and WALLA we were able to spend somewhere in the area of $15 Million dollars, and we are going to be no better off that when we started. Vintage Prince George planning and execution.

And best of all;;;;. No one will take any responsibility for any of this. It will be sold to taxpayers as a great success.

It should be named. ***KINSLEYS FOLLY***

A Folly is described as **Any foolish and fruitless but expensive undertaking**
Is not the new bridge a part of the lame assed dangerous goods route?
metalman.
"And yes mr.pg, I am moving, at my own pace!!!"

Not sure what this comment is referring to. Maybe you have me confused with someone else.
Wait until Canfor & Husky have their shutdowns, should be interesting to see how far the mini-circle gets traffic backed up. It would be worth the entertainment to sit & watch after the 1st
real snowfall, we could start a pool here on O-250. How many trucks slide off the circle or how many fancy red bricks will be left intact come April, or how high the red bricks pop into the air when the snowplow blade hits them ;)
The Bridge and the whole area around the roundabout ie; Pulpmill Road, North Nechako West to 97 connection, off ramp to Hart Hiway, are all part of the New Dangerous Good Route. (Actually Dangerous Goods have been using these routes since 1965.)
Is the hidden message here that the dangerous goods route that existed before, just not called that, has been made more dangerous by allowing opposing traffic and forcing it through a probably undersized roundabout?
Perhaps the City can install some traffic signals which can be activated by the drivers who are carrying dangerous goods soe that they have no competing traffic as they negotiate through the roundabout. :-)
wow, what a bunch of negative comments about this bridge.i suppose they will all be negative when the domano highway 16
upgrade is done to.
It will be fun to sit with a video camera at the north end and watch the performance when the traffic begins to flow. It will be very interesting.

Round-a-bouts are great, but throw in the chip trucks and such and it will be an interesting sight to see unfold.
polar7018. I havent heard any comments about the Highway 16 Domano upgrade, probably because it is a Provincial project, (maybe with some City input) and is obviously necessary.

The City and their out-of-town consultant, Associated Engineering, did an incredibly poor job of the round-a-bout at the north end of the new bridge The design is non up to standard and should be the subject of a safety audit.
Im not sure why people arnt in favour of the traffic circle?
I think its a great idea and it will work much better than any lights.
Wait and see.

That circle will be able to handle more traffic than any lights can
Personally traffic circles work great, but this is prince george people cant grasp the merge, yeild, 4 way stops, even red lights so lets throw in a traffic circle and see. just go to the casino, bring a coffee and watch the idiots there try to figure out what to do. its quite interesting. I suggest a strong police presence at the traffic circle and start fining the people who cant obey these simple roads. IF YOU FINE THEM THEY WILL LEARN!
Hey private one, are you a weigh scale cop by any chance? ;)
metalman.
I am not a cop of any sort, just a driver who observes my fellow drivers.

I have noticed the same conditions that "privateone" writes about:

Too many people do not understand how to:

1. merge as opposed to yield
2. yield as opposed to stop
3. handle 4 way stops
4. handle flashing lights of any sort
5. move to the right lane of a 4 lane, two way road when no longer passing.
metalman, i drive for a living and deal with them all the time. but let me say this with out them commercial vehicle "cops" can you amagine what kind of crap would be on our roads? i say take it up a notch and lets start having our cars and trucks inspected every 3-5 years. make our roads safe from unsafe vehicles!
but thats my opinion.
