The announcement was made in the Nechako Room at the SD57 Office
Former School Board Trustee Bev Christensen has been selected to present the District's "Springboard to Success" Scholarships that will be awarded in June, 2006.
The two new $1,000.00 scholarships are made possible by the investment return on a more than $110, 000.00 Millenium Fund endowment being managed by the Prince George Community Foundation. This year the fund generated more than $5,700.00 -- covering the two new scholarships, the $2000.00 Prince of Wales Scholarship and the $1,000.00 Don Thorlakson Memorial Scholarship. The remaining monies were returned to the fund to help build the principal.
Christensen says, "I am honoured to be selected by the (Springboard to Success Scholarship Fund) committee and I am looking forward to presenting these two scholarships. They will make a difference in the post-secondary success of these students."
The "Springboard" scholarships will go to deserving students who finish "second". Committee Chair, former Trustee Fred McLeod, says while the top students receive the Prince of Wales and Don Thorlakson Memorial scholarships, these two new awards will recognize the students who finished in second place.
For her part, Christensen is urging donors to come foward and contribute to the District's Millenium Fund, so that as the principal increases, so, too, does the investment return...meaning more money to reward worthy students with scholarships.
