Quesnel- The Federal government continues to drop money in the region. The Cariboo Central Interior Poultry Producers are about to receive $724,865 to develop phase two of its mobile poultry processor unit project, and to purchase a wood chipping unit to service producers and farmers in the region with bedding material.

The money comes from the Canada Economic Action plan that will see $306 million spent across Western Canada according to MP Dick Harris.

Meantime the Nazko First Nations will receive $ 498,018 to implement the First Nations Youth Forestry Training program, which according to Harris has been developed with input and support from both industry and the local community.

Guess what people. They had the closing ceremonies of the 7 week program yesterday in Baker Creek.

A bit behind the times. Or is this for next year already?
I have chickens; when do I get my slice of the pie? Bedding is expensive, I could use the help.
What is a "First Nation's Youth Forestry Training" program??
What does it do,or rather, what is it supposed to do?
Are first nations young people paid to attend, or is the money just for teachers and tuition?
Is there a program for kids who are not first nations?
First Nation's Youth Forestry Training Program.

Andy, just Google it. It's an ongoing program. It says that "more than twenty" students graduated.

"Is there a program for kids who are not first nations?"

Perhaps, perhaps not.
A lot of kids, not as many as used to, get jobs with silviculture companies and are just plain newbies. They are given some training at the start and learn the rest on the job.

This sounds like a contractor who managed to find a project that kept their people working as well as delivering a program to a group of people who might be able to use it to kick start them in the field.

This is actually not unlike programs in the trades that were set up when there were not enough apprenticeship spaces available due to a recession at the time.

It got us a tourism building paid for by federal dollars, a building in a kids forestry camp, and a few other buildings that benefitted both the community and people in the program.

Perhaps we need more of these at this time in our economic situation. Perhaps the "lagoon in a forest" project in Mcbride could use that kind of approach. Then again, maybe that is part of what they will be doing there.
Must be running out of things to put money into.
This poultry thing is interesting. Can anyone explain why it is beneficial to bring the processor to the chickens rather than the opposite, which is usually the case?
A whole bunch of small operators, of 1000 chickens, It makes more logistic to bring the processing plant to the site, than the other way around. See dead chickens don't take up much space when their cleaned, gutted and frozen.
Sounds more and more like there may be an election in the wind....
bring it!
But do they take up less space than a whole mobile processing plant? If you're taking a truck of live chickens to a processor, or a truck-sized processor to the chickens, what is the difference? At least if you take the chickens to the processor, they are all together once processed and can maybe be sold in larger orders, getting some economies of scale.

I'm sure this mobile operation has a benefit if the Producers were fighting for it, but I can't see it, so I must be missing something. Anyone?
Sorry, that should have been, do the live chickens take up more space to transport than the plant?
Wolfie I think it just comes down to the most human way of conducting business... the transporting of the stressed chickens I'm sure isn't good for the end product, nor everyone involved when things could be done more efficiently on the killing side, rather than the dollar side of things. That would be my guess.

I don't think its about economics and nor should every single decision be based purely on economics. Some times ethics has a price and this might be one of those cases... I agree though it would be nice to hear why our tax dollars are spent, so that we don't have to guess as to the rational.

It seems everything about our tax dollars and our governments is shrouded in secrecy these days. Its a regressive trend we all pay for.

No need to get plucky about it, I think all this clucking is just getting your feathers ruffled for nothing.

A mobile processor does not require the acquisition of commercial real estate and does not require the expense of setting up a formal plant which is in the millions.
The local commercial processor shut down, leaving them nowhere to take their chickens.
