Prince George, B.C. - Northern Health has started the planning process for residents to occupy the new residential care facility at 20th Avenue and Victoria Street in Prince George.

In recent weeks, Western Industrial Contractors has been putting finishing touches on the residential care aspect of the $42 million project, as well as completing outdoor landscaping and paving work. Construction continues as well on the assisted living component of the Gateway project.

The residential care facilities are expected to be substantially complete in early September. Once the “substantial completion” stage is reached, a number of steps must be taken before residents can move in. Crews will perform safety system tests, install additional equipment, and thoroughly clean the facility, followed by staff orientation.

Northern Health is planning for 94 residents to move into the completed residential care section over several days in mid-to-late September. Information sessions have already been held to give residents and their families an overview of the occupancy process, including residents’ moving dates. Grand opening celebrations will be held once residents and staff have had a chance to adjust to their new surroundings

The new community of care facility for seniors in the Gateway district of Prince George will provide 175 new residential care beds and supportive housing units for seniors. The facility includes 94 residential care beds, and 50 assisted living units for seniors who can be mostly independent with specialized housing, meals and health supports. Northern Health is working to determine the best use for the remaining 31 housing units.

The 50 assisted living units on the site will be run through Independent Living BC, a housing-for-health program where tenants pay 70 per cent of their after-tax income for their units. Residents will receive two meals a day, weekly housekeeping and linen services, 24-hour emergency response, personal care services and recreational and social opportunities.  The Gateway assisted living facilities are expected to be ready for occupants in November 2009.

Prince George residents looking for more information on the Gateway facility can call a newly-created toll-free information line, 1-888-965-GATE (4283)

94 residents moving in over several days? Should be interesting to watch.
NHA has been trying to get residents moved into Terraceview Lodge since April. Last announcement said maybe by Nov. contingent on sufficient staff. Speaking of planning process, Planning by HR is the reason for the delays. Hope yours goes as scheduled.
So tell us what we really want to know. How much is the rent per month for one senior citizen?
The rent is 70% of their income. Some may have only CPP and OAS, while others may have additional income from private or company pensions, thus the rent is applied fairly to all. I think that is a good and progressive way to determine how much each resident has to pay. Planning? NHA? HR? all in the same sentence? I don't think the NHA could plan their way out of a wet paper bag without striking a new committee to study the problem, and forming a new department to deal with all the additional paperwork load. Then you have to have a manager, an assistant manager.............
metalman.
This oughto give the Prince George Chateau a little wake up call regarding their prices.
The 50 assisted living units will cost residents 70% of their after tax income, however the article does not say that the same applies to the 94 residenial care beds, or the remaining 31 housing units.
