The President of the Cariboo-Prince George Liberal riding association had set a tentative news conference for 9am this morning to announce the party's candidate in the upcoming federal election.

However, when contacted this morning, the Liberals had taken a step back.  Riding association president, Dave Wilbur now says the party, will instead, be holding a nomination meeting at 4pm on Sunday in Prince George.  He says the meeting is mandatory under the Liberal Party's "green-light" structure and 48-hours notice must be given.  The local Liberals had hoped to have a candidate named by last weekend, then by mid-week.

When asked if the party was caught off-guard by the dropping of the writ, Wilbur says, "No, it's not that at all.  It's a matter of the incumbent was, of course, up-and-running and it was a matter of finding the candidate.  And it just took longer than some of us expected."

As for the name to be put forward, Wilbur offered just one hint, "The person that I know is going to put HIS name forward, I'm happy with, yes."

The riding association president says the 48-hours notice has been given via e-mails and telephone calls.  When asked how many local members the party has in Prince George, Wilbur says, "I can't give you that answer."  He has no estimate on how many will attend the Sunday afternoon gathering.  As to where it is, "I can't tell you that."

Wilbur says a news release will be sent out following the nomination meeting with the candidate's name and particulars.  Is he concerned about the timing of the nomination meeting, "Well, obviously it wasn't my preference.  In the long run, is it going to make much difference that it's a Sunday, rather than a Monday through the week? I don't think so."

Sounds like a serious change is needed at the top of the local Lib organisation. Maybe Wilbur was too worried about his council bid, and forgot his other duties, burned out after losing so badly.
