This weekend and next, B.C.'s Gold Rush Town is hosting an old-fashioned Christmas, that will transport visitors back in time...
Manager, Robin Sharpe, says, "The Barkerville old-fashioned Christmas tries to re-create a Christmas experience much as the pioneers and gold miners would have celebrated in the 1870's and 1880's."
There will be sleigh rides and carolling, Saint Nicholas in the Enchanted Forest, and fully-decorated homes complete with interpreters inside, often doing some cooking. Sharpe says several of the businesses will be open, "selling period-correct gifts, so it's something different than the gifts you would get for people in the stores in Quesnel and Prince George."
In addition, he says the community of Wells is getting involved, with a number of activities going on at the Island Mountain Art Gallery and a "Light up" Festival at 7pm.
The Barkerville events run from 11am until 5pm both Saturday and Sunday, this weekend and next. Sharpe says, "The event is quite weather-related, if we have a bad day, we can get as few as 50 or 60 people, but on some of our best days, we've had over a thousand people here for the weekend." The weather forecast for this weekend, he says, is nice.
