Olympics...That's a Wrap

Following  our series on the 2010 Olympics, you may  want to sit back and reflect on just what is in it for the central interior, the north and northwest of the province?

It doesn’t take long to realize that we will be called upon to foot the major share of the bill and that in itself will take much needed revenue from this region. Communities to the south such as Kelowna, Kamloops and Chilliwack have already staked out their proposed territory for the games.

The World Junior Hockey Series is sufficient evidence to realize that Prince George, in spite of our hockey heritage, is not going to benefit from any team either practicing or playing here.

Our politicians seem blind to the fact we are out of the loop on 2010 . We are sending off a contingent to Torino under the guise that the group will return with a Santa bag full of goodies. Past history of such excursions show we have been dismal failures at attracting either industry or commerce of the sports nature.

Why in the world don't we concentrate on trying to pick off some of the many tournaments such as the Scott Women’s Curling that we handled so well?

Instead we are in a foreign country with people who do not speak the language trying to entice people to come to our region, for what? I fear those that are attending do not know that answer.

Air service has started between Kamloops and Seattle and there are efforts underway to explore other opportunities. Chilliwack and Kelowna are also seeing the opportunities of our neighbors in the northern US and are expending their efforts trying to broaden that market.

Where are we?  We are in Torino and soon China, where we have been before with less than impressive results, but with a taxpayer bill for our efforts.

We know what we have, why in the world we aren’t selling it?

For example has anyone taken the time to say get in touch with the producers of Survivor, asking them if they would come to this region in the winter? The very first time for the show, fly them here, show them the potential, pay for their hotel and their flight and maybe, just maybe they will bite, because if they do, the film commission and the Olympics can take a hike for the publicity we would receive.

We can guarantee a winter and a situation that here to for has not existed on the program in which millions of the people watching actually have to live under winter conditions.

Fly a few of the snowmobile clubs up from Washington and California and show them that we have a tremendous wilderness, open space. Take a page out of young Dustin Lloyd’s book and show them some winter cabins, build some more with the money we are about to blow in Torino and start selling what we have, a remote winter climate.

As for the China which is the next big trip, why not for a change, send some very important people some tickets as they do in other parts of North America have them come to this area where we can strut our stuff to show them what we really have?

Instead we are bent on heading on yet another fishing trip to where the fish aren’t biting, while all along around, us are fish just itching to grab a hook.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Ben, I recall reading somewhere that Spokane Washington had a refferendum recently to get approval for their local governments to look into ways that Spokane and Washington State can help BC get a four lane highway linking Spokane with Prince George. I've never read a thing about that in our local media.

Apparently they see huge opportunities in trade with Asia going through this region with a port in Prince Rupert and figure unless they have better infrastructure linking them to us they may miss the boat. From the sounds of it the proposed highway would run up through the Kootenies with its ultimate destination being Prince George. I think that waould be something Intitiative Prince George should be tuned into....
I really like it when someone comes up with aconstructive, so to speak, idea. A survivor show is an excellent idea!
I do however see a problem with fooling around in the winter time. The risks are real. The shoots will be COLD. Just how much reality do these fools want? I think the challenge is just too much.
I don't watch the show, is it any different than the usual tame hollywood stuff?
Great articles, Ben.
Good reading, good ideas, but I do think that holiday to Torino is a "Go."
The end of February is "cabin fever" time in the North.
Torino will be a nice escape for the chosen few.
They will be checking out what appeals to tourists.
The entertainment aspect will be an enjoyable get away-and they can always talk to one another-as there is likely not an Italian in the lot.
The constant hype on tourists suggests to myself that the building of a huge "Gaming Centre" is definitely the big drawing card, even though it will affect the local residents and businesses locally negatively.
It will bring a considerable amount of revenue into the city coffers, undoubtedly. It could actually encourage tourists to lengthen their stay rather than simply do a "drive through" of this city.
The downtown has reached a peak of destitution, and rebuilding it is a pipe dream not deserving of exploring any possibility of success.
To try and strike a chord of interest in our wilderness to attract tourists is just not worthy of the effort.
Who wants to go to a lake or campsite to be eaten alive by mosquitoes, black flies, wasps, etc.?
We cannot even rely on Mother Nature to give us decent weather.
Roughing it does not excite many vacationers. That is why we see so many recreational vehicles on the highways during the summer-but take note-we would be hard pressed to point out a "tent trailer." Holidayers want to have a "good time" and sticking to their bedding with an overload of "insect repellent" hardly qualifys.
Yessir-watch out for that "ultra super gaming centre."
Those who seriously feel we have a tremendous amount of drawing power in other areas, such as rivers, lakes, streams, rain, snow, ice, extreme cold, bug infested forests, had best take a look at their own ideas of a holiday.
Are they staying home to enjoy this bountiful utopia when they get a couple weeks off.
I betcha' not!!!!
So bring on that gaming center, and "let the chips fall where they may!!"
If the city is losing residents, they are losing money.
Will there be enough of the population left to take up the slack. or will the needed additional revenue be uppermost on the agenda when budget times are imminent?
You be the judge.
>Fly a few of the snowmobile clubs up from Washington and California and show them that we have a tremendous wilderness, open space. <

Just imagine the outcry if someone like Tourism Prince George would ask the City to help fund something like that!

BTW I found a flyer from Tourism Kamloops in my mailbox the other day, inviting me to consider a Christmas vacation in beautiful Kamloops! Does Tourism Prince George feed the mailboxes in Kamloops with similar brochures?

I really would like to know!

I better not say something too negative as Jethro has left us already for greener pastures: too much whining and complaining, apparently.
C'mon Diplomat-you and I both know the easy road is to establish that big gaming centre, and you can "Bet" the people will be frequenting the place to empty their pockets.
Tourists and residents will be drawn to the place like flys to an outdoor barbecue in Saskatchewan!!!!!! (And there is no province that breeds flys quite like Saskatchewan).
The Provincial Government will make a lot of money, and so will the City.
Just give plosh accommodation, a bit of entertainment for those who refrain from gambling, (do not require an overabundance of entertainment), some good booze, have decent meals available, and you can bet the place will be busy--and profitable.
Include some forms of entertainment for youngsters, including baby sitting services, and watch the money roll.
Think of the employment it will create!!!
It must be open 24 hours a day.
Oh! did I neglect to say free accommodation must be available for those luxury R V units, and even if they do not pay for parking- the place will get that money also, making everyone happy except for those R V parks that offer nothing but the basics.
It will provide potfuls of revenue year round.
For those who feel rivers, lakes and streams will attract tourists, go ahead and blow your money on a private enterprise to compete with the "gaming centre."
You will also lose!!!!!
Take my word for it-and the City and Gov't will be in a WIN WIN situation.
I wonder who the "goose" will be that is handed the "golden egg" by establishing this gold mine????
Does the City have anyone in mind????
Bet they do!!!!

Darn-I already miss Jethro.
Are you describing the Treasure Cove Casino?

>Darn-I already miss Jethro.<

Me too! I think he checked out just when some of us were getting the hang of this blog!

BTW, any idea why "admin" never gets back into the subject of the discussion and comments on any of the bright inputs we are making 'free of charge'?

I mean, he raises a controversial matter and then just sits back silently.....is that polite?
Yeah, Dip, he has finally realized he does not know it all, and is relying on us to fill in the gaps.
We must not disappoint him, as he does work hard to bring up these controversial subjects which encourage us to respond.
I am sure there are many residents "shaking their heads" over what takes place in this city.
Too bad the Citizen does not pick up on some of the very interesting findings that Ben enlightens us with, like the loss of a good business to Salmon Arm, and to top it off we were told a "pack of lies."
And the guy is rewarded with a trip to Torino-for what reason??
Too few know the truth.
I am just amazed at times as to how he acquires some of this newsworthy information.
Just hope he does not stop.
I am rather piqued that some posters don't appreciate the truth, and quickly come to the defense of a person who basically has no defense.I wonder why the party accused does not make any effort to rectify any statements which consist of falsehoods??? directed towards them.
I betcha' Ben makes certain he has the facts before he does any article.
Who can dispute the truth???
