Prince George ,B.C. - B.C.’s new Chief Justice of B.C.’s Supreme Court has a Prince George connection.
The new Chief Justice, Robert Bauman, was an associate and partner with the Prince George law firm Wilson, King and Company from 1975 to 1977.
He then became a partner in Wilson, Bauman in Kelowna, and joined Bull Housser and Tupper in Vancouver in 1982.
He was appointed to the B.C. Supreme Court in 1996 where he served until last year when he was appointed to the B.C. Court of Appeal.
Justice Bauman’s name made the headlines in the third trial of Kelly Ellard, the teen from Victoria who was convicted of killing Reena Virk in the fall of 1997. The B.C. Court of appeal ruled Judge Bauman hadn’t given the jury the right instructions on controversial testimony. The Court of appeal ordered a fourth trial. That order was overturned by the Supreme Court of Canada which ruled that while Bauman had erred, the error would not have affected the verdict.
Justice Bauman is taking over the role as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of B.C., replacing Donald Brenner who recently announced his retirement.
