Prince George, B.C.- “An election now would put our economic recovery into jeopardy” those are the words of Prince George-Peace River M.P. Jay Hill as he appeared this morning on the Meisner program on CFISFM.
He says there have been numerous projects approved, and Hills says there are others ready to be announced but those projects will be put on hold not only for the course of an election, but for a couple of months afterward as whoever forms government comes up to speed.
Hill says the Government has dedicated billions of dollars into what he calls hard infrastructure, in an effort to stimulate the economy and keep people working. “There’s the highway 37 northern transmission line that’s in the proposal state for building a high voltage power line into north western B.C. something that I’ve been very supportive of and working with industry and the province and the province to try and see if we can get federal funding for, all of those types of projects obviously will be put on hold. Anything that hasn’t been announced by the time the writ is dropped, whenever that might be, would be put on hold. I think that would be incredibly unfortunate.”
Hill says the government has been trying to role out the stimulus package projects as rapidly as possible “There is going to be a full report to parliament in the next couple of weeks about the progress we’ve made. It would be incredibly unfortunate for the country and for Canadians if that was put on hold, whether its for the five weeks of an election campaign and then for a few months afterwards while whoever the new government is gets all squared away again gets up to speed.”
Hill says virtually every program started under the stimulus package has been over subscribed “There’s clearly a need there.” He says with most projects being jointly funded, all levels of government have been responding, trying to address the economic slowdown.
An election won’t impact projects that have already been announced or have already gone to tender.
Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff has made it clear his party will try to force an election at the first available opportunity. That opportunity for a non confidence vote will come October 2nd.
