Prince George, B.C. - A bike swap and cycle demonstration day is being held today in Prince George to raise funds for the city’s next Bike to Work Week in 2010.

The bike swap will connect people who want to sell their bicycles and cycling equipment with those keen for a bargain. Whether they buy or sell, all cyclists will take away tips on bike maintenance, route planning, equipment and safety.

Anyone wishing to sell or donate bicycles and cycling-related equipment can drop off their items at the Moose Hall (663 Douglas St) today between 8:00 am and 11:00 am. The swap meet will open at noon and will run until 5:00 pm.

In addition to finding great deals, swappers can participate in miniworkshops, safety demos, auctions and prize draws. Weather permitting, the Prince George Brain Injured Group will be on site hosting all-ages bike rodeos.

Bike to Work Week was held for the first time in Prince George earlier this year and proved to be a great success. 76 teams registered for the event and the results for 326 cyclists were submitted online. Prince George ranked 6th in participation out of 18 BC communities, and 2nd in the interior region of the province.

“Cycling, especially as an alternative mode of transportation, has really grown in Prince George in recent years,” says Bike to Work Week organizer Jillian Merrick. “A swap meet was identified by many as something that would help cyclists meet their equipment needs, and learn some of the essential skills for bicycle operation.”

This should have been posted a week ago!
This event has been publicized in the coming events section of daily and weekly printed newspapers over the last 2 weeks. Further details could be found on the "bike to work " website for an equally long period.

Both printed sources that I saw provided phone contact info as well as referral to the "bike to work" website for more details.

With little or no effort on my part.....I certainly was able to see a lot of info on this event.

Due to previous commitments, I was unable to attend.

I don't read our local 'rag' except for front page and opinion, nor do I spend time on a 'bike to work' site. I watch the news on TV and I listen to the radio Canadian Brainwashing Corporation. Then I work sometimes too. My point was that if you're going to post something like that, you might want to give a little advance notice or just leave it alone. I do have a very nice new ladies bike that I would have taken with me had I known.

This simple statemment says it all.

If you want to be aware of local type items ....then you have to look beyond the front page and opinion sections. You need to adopt a local perspective in what you seek.
The national news and tv news avalable from out of town sources is unlikely to provide such informtion.
ppfftt, daily print media. Supporting our local pulp industry? No wait, our mills produce Kraft paper don't they? They used to produce newsprint in Mackenzie for shipment to China.
