Prince George, B.C.-  About 200 people were on hand for the official start of the annual Terry Fox run in Prince George to raise money for cancer research.

Before starting their walk, run or ride, participants gathered around the monument to Terry Fox and listened to the taped broadcast of Terry announcing to reporters that the cancer had spread to his lungs, and he would have to stop his Marathon of Hope and start new treatment.

As they listened to that tape recording, some of the participants in today’s event, wiped the tears from their eyes.

During that media conference, Terry said he hoped he had inspired others, and that people would continue on where he had left off.

They have done just that.

With a Terry Fox run now held   in nations around the world,  his efforts sparked global participation in an annual event to raise funds for cancer research.

Typically, Prince George  raises between 12 and 13 thousand dollars each year.
