Prince George, B.C. - The Regional District of Fraser Fort George and the City of Prince George, are joining forces to get some funding to cover the development of a wildfire mitigation plan.

While the City of Prince George has already done a great deal of work to reduce the threat of wildfire within its boundaries, a report recently commissioned by the City says there has yet to be work done within a 10 km radius of the City’s boundaries.

That report says the risk of wildfire hazards on Crown land within that 10km radius is high to very high and these forests, in their present state, pose a serious threat to the City of Prince George, as well as residents within the Regional District.

The Regional District of Fraser Fort George will submit an application to the Union of B.C. Municipalities, asking for $80 thousand in grants to develop the mitigation plan. The City will also work with the Lheidli T’enneh, provincial representatives and other key stakeholders.

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George went through a similar process for Crown lands in the vicinity of Bear Lake. The planning and prescription stages have been completed on that project and the Regional District is now moving towards treatments this fall and winter.
