Prince George, BC.- Prince George City Councilor Brian Skakun will be making his first court appearance today since being charged with breaching the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
The charge arises from the leak of a confidential consultant’s report about staff members. The report focused on the possibility of a conflict of interest between two employees who were involved in a relationship.
The report was leaked to the CBC which posted the full report on its website for a short period of time.
The two employees no longer work for the City and have since moved from the community.
If convicted, Skakun faces a maximum fine of $2,000.

Here come da judge! Here come da judge!
Sockit to them Brian!!!
I hope that the city discovers they are opening their own can of worms here. Sounds like someone in city hall doesn't like Mr. Skakun.

Good luck Councillor.

Skakun is accused of knowingly leaking materials that were discussed in secret. He swore he would keep the matter secret before participating in the meeting. Since he didn't like the way the meeting went, he released information he promised to keep secret.

I don't know the details of the events, but I think this is the meat of what happened, isn't it? If he is allowed to get away with this, what happens in the next meeting when the council discusses real estate info? Can he then tip off his friends to get in on the deal before the public knows?

A promise is a promise. His word should mean something, shouldn't it? He said he wouldn't release information, and he released information. If that's what he did, however he felt about the contents of the information, then he needs to man up and accept his punishment.
I am not a union man, I am not a left winger.

But, I always respected Brian, for standing up and voicing his opinion. I hope that all comes out well for him. I don't want a bunch of hand puppets on our council.

Obviously, if Brian comes out standing, I think a few heads are gonna roll.

Go for it Brian.
I support Brian too. He did nothing wrong. It sure is nice for a change to have someone on council like Brian.
I'm on pins and needles here.
how can you say he did nothing wrong?!?! just cause you like the guy doesnt mean he betrayed our trust
Confusion, mis-information and mis-understanding prevail, as usual.
Go get 'em Skakun, and good luck.
metalman.
Yoshi - he ALLEGEDLY leaked information. Has yet to be proven.

I'm much more interested in his allegations that someone tried to bribe him and when he brought it forward, it was ignored. THAT is far more concerning to me than anything else and I hope it all comes out.
Thanks Thunder-you are of course correct-he hasn't been found guilty. What I was trying to say is IF he was guilty he should be punished. Of course, if he is found not guilty, then no punishment. My point was that IF he leaked confidential documents, he should be punished.

What is the issue about someone trying to bribe him? Heard nothing about that.
Skakun is a great councillor that stands up for what he believes are what the people of prince george want at council meetings. He is not afraid to ruffle some feathers to have his thoughts heard and debated on. Prince George people have to back him in his next challenge.

thanks Brian from the hill walker
Yoshi - apparently someone tried to bribe him for a favorable vote on an issue presented to council and he brought this attempt forward. Here is the link.

I hope Brian wins this. I think he is a great councillor as he supports the people that voted him in, he has GUTS and we sure need some Guts on council. I think they are trying to clip his wings.
