CLINTON - Strong winds and summer-like conditions yesterday caused the Kelly Creek fire to grow an estimated 1,000 hectares along the north and north-east flanks. Crews today are regrouping and formulating new plans to contain the fire. The fire size is now estimated at 20,500 hectares, or 205 square kilometres.

Fire weather specialists are forecasting warm, windy conditions with higher humidity today, although they are expecting temperatures to cool to more seasonal levels over the weekend.

Although mop-up continues on parts of the fire, crews will be reassigned to support suppression efforts in areas where there is accessible ground north-east of the fire. Rugged terrain limits crews ability to work in many areas of the fire, due to safety concerns.

The Incident Management Team directing fire suppression efforts has requested additional resources to assist, including additional helicopters and firefighting crews. Forty-six firefighters are already on the ground today, supported by a helicopter and heavy equipment.

The contingency guards previously established north of Clinton and east of Big Bar road remain in place.

The Thompson Nicola Regional District has issued an evacuation alert for areas affected by the Kelly Creek wildfire. For additional information, please contact the Emergency Operations Centre at 1-866-377-7188.
