Quesnel, B.C.- The City of Quesnel has been awarded $1.577 million from the federal government   for the West Quesnel Land Stability program. The amount received is  far short of what Quesnel had applied for.

The funds will be matched by the Province and the City of Quesnel to mitigate the land slippage in West Quesnel  and stabilize the area.

This past spring, Quesnel Council directed staff to submit an application to the Building Canada Grant program for for approximately $11.9 million of which, $3.47 million was for pumping and monitoring wells; $7.45 million for new storm drainage systems; and $1 million for a leak detection program. The City would have been responsible, for $3.98 million.
The Uplands area of West Quesnel has been experiencing impacts from ongoing ground movement because a large, ancient landslide exists in that area. This movement has been occurring over a very long period of time and is very slow, about 2 to 7 centimetres per year.  The effects on buildings and civic infrastructure vary with location but can be significant.

To date, the City has invested more than $1.6 million towards finding a lasting solution to the problem. There are more than 750 homes plus an elementary school in the land stability study area, with more than 2,100 people calling the area home.

Seems the Government has millions for upgrading useless roads, and pumping millions into private industrial parks, but when it comes to helping Joe Taxpayer save his house from destruction the purse strings seem to tighten up.
