Prince George, B.C.- JDC West 2010 will be held in Prince George January 15 through 17th. It is the largest and most prestigious undergraduate business competition in Western Canada.

“Jeux Du Commerce” will bring more than 700 participants to the community to compete athletically and academically.

In order for the event to be a success, event organizers are asking that the City kick in $40 thousand dollars to match the money put up by UNBC.    The JDC Team is also requesting financial support, last year the City gave the team $5,000.

It is estimated the event will pump at least $735 thousand dollars into the local economy.

City Council has not  yet committed to the cash, and has referred the item to CIty staff for inforamtion on sources of possible funding.

$40,000.00 ??? Right now our city can not afford this. They had to raise our taxes because they could not meet the budget. This is concidered an extra and all extras should be denied. Until our economy picks up all these hand outs should be slapped. There is no firm proof that 700 people will spend $700,000.00.
Don't hire the clean air ambassador. This would be a better use of that money, although putting it towards debt would probably be the best use!!!!!!!
And if they do spend $700,000? What of it?

Does the City get a 5.5% return of that $700,000 to at least cover that $40,000?

Has anyone ever figured that out?

Then we add the $5,000 per year for the team. Is there a cost recovery to that? If not, and they received the $ for the first time last year, and will continue to receive it, then that should be added to the $40,000. In fact, if they have the competition here every 10 years, let's say, that becomes $40,000 + $50,000 = $90,000 that has to be recovered from money projected to be spent in the City.

Does the term "sustainable" ring a bill at Council. They use it, but do they understand what it means. I really have my doubts about that and it is getting worse by the week.
Raise the registration fees!!

Fewer people will come. So we will only get $500,000 spent in the City. But it costs $40,000 less.

So, in reality, we are looking at paying $40,000 to get an extra $200,000 that businesses would not normally get. There is no way the City will realize that return on the differential.

This is a no brainer.

If that money is going to be spent, there are much more needy people to support for a City than those who can afford to go to University.

If we want to spend it on education, send it to Africa. Kielburger will build 5 schools with that money for people who cannot even afford to finish just a basic education.
