Prince George, B.C.- The RCMP new building project is up for discussion this evening at the Prince George City Council meeting.

The construction drawings are at the 60% completion mark, and estimated costs for the facility have been trimmed by just under $1.7 million. The overall cost is now estimated to be $45.8 million, with $35.8 million in construction costs.

Also on the agenda,  Councillor Brian Skakun’s motion that calls for a policy that would provide him with information he is currently seeking under Freedom of Information requests. The Mayor has already indicated he will rule part of the motion “out of order’ as he believes it calls on the Council to supersede provincial laws.

A motion from Councilors Cameron Stolz and David Wilbur  calls on City Staff  to bring back a report by mid December on how Prince George can implement the kind of 'Electrical and Fire Safety Inspection Team' used in the city of Surrey to cripple the grow op business.

During a 4 month period in 2005, Surrey had a team of two police officers, two fire fighters and an electrical inspector enforce the Safety Standards Act at 126 suspected grow operations. Most of the sites had electrical code violations. Seventy eight of the sites had their power disconnected, while seven-day notices at 11 others. A further 30 sites were referred to the RCMP and BC Hydro for theft of power.
Power was restored only after the site met code and received electrical permits.

Each case was processed in about four hours, including all research, reports and site visits. The costs of the 3 month pilot project, including the four-person field team and a clerk, was about $120 thousand dollars.

Also on the agenda this evening, a request that would see the City install special street lights which will dim their power when there is little traffic. The system is expected to save about $34 thousand a year in energy costs, but will cost about $170 thousand to install.

Quit wasting money!
Is there recall legislation for City Council? These clowns are trying out for the Gong show! Norgate's former site for $520 thousand. How much per month are the taxpayers losing on the Cadillac Ranch? Lost revenue plus heat for the winter. Can we hear one story of how this council knows we are in a recession?
"Also on the agenda this evening, a request that would see the City install special street lights which will dim their power when there is little traffic."

Are they serious? The street lights are already way to dim.
".... install special street lights which will dim their power when there is little traffic."

Can these lights detect foot traffic and bicycle traffic?

The City is dark from about 5pm to 7 or so am in the winter. Cars have headlights and drive on city roads such as Tyner which have no street lights and ought ot have street lights. People who walk need to feel safe. Making streets darker will go a long way to make them feel less safe.

Is there a standard for safety in such a case? If there is, there should be!!!! Otherwise, why do we not just remove all the lights and install no more lights in new subdivisions? Let's try it with Boundary road and the subdivision. Get all property owners to supply the lights....

Whoever is proposing this, are they thinking at all???????
street lights: stepping over dollars to pick up dimes.
The green revolution has been corrupted into another "industry". Who gets to pay, why you and me!
I think it's becasue Quesnel has a nicer detatchment than us!! Giant waste of money, when you have a more than adequate building standing. Which by they way was designed for the future to add floors on top of the current building. And why not just renovate the current building. The money defnietly could be used elsewhere. 45 million would sure re-pave a lot of roads.. or we could hire 5 more communication managers!!! lol..
and with the idea of dimming traffic lights.. so what happens when the sun is shinning directly on them and the lights are too dim to see??
A suggestion, So on all the drug busts, and confiscation of property. These properties should be sold off at a auction and all proceeds go against the new city RCMP building. Wouldn't that be a good solution to this problem.

This is no different than the Provincial Government taxing the cigarettes for recovering health costs.
The City has been procrastinating over the new building for well over fifteen years. By doing this they have pushed the price higher and higher. This is the worst council in many a decade. The mayor keeps saying things but has no action (one term mayor). Two to three years ago the building was about 85% toward the final decision, why are we back to 60% and letting the price tag climb. Build the new police office or renovate the fairly new "bingo hall", BUT GET ON WITH IT.
Yeah, renovate the old Safeway/Bingo hall,
I bet the structure is sound, and they could add on to it, modernize all the hvac, lighting and insulation, put in low E glass and have a real nice space. Look at the hush hush project on the corner of 22nd and Quinn, that is what they are doing, they have gutted it and are spending a lot of money sure, but not 50 million bucks. Is there no provision within the LEED concept for re-using a sound existing structure? ( Mr. Stern, can you chime in here? ) From what little I know about LEED, I think there is a component for re-using materials, why not an entire building? Would that not be the ultimate in "re-cycling"?
metalman.
Yes there is a compnent for "re-cyling" a buildin. There was a great write-up on the old Canadian Tire building being turned into a trades building for CNC for a LEED project.
Prince George would be better off getting rid of the RCMP and starting their own police force. The city was complaining about how expensive the RCMP have become anyway. Some of the comunities on the lower mainland are concidering moving in that direction in the future as well. Maybe if more comunities did this the RCMP would change their arogant ways.
"Look at the hush hush project on the corner of 22nd and Quinn"

You have got to be kidding. If you wanted to know what is going on there try asking someone.

The building that is being renovated on 22nd & Quinn is privately owned and being renovated by the owner to be leased to a provincial anti gang unit.

Sorry, no conspiracy.
"Prince George would be better off getting rid of the RCMP and starting their own police force."

If that somehow would stop the constant complaining on this site, I would be all for it... but I know better.

And do we know for a fact that a private police force would be any cheaper? And seriously, the way City Hall runs things, I really doubt they could manage a police force effectively.
Hey Streetwise, I thought that reason for the big fancy police station was so that they could put all the police departments in one building? So why are they starting a new department at a new location that the tax payers will be paying for the costs of?? I dont get this. Even if it is privately owned we the tax payers will be paying for the RCMP to rent it ...right??
Yes MrPg I guess you are right there. What was I thinking. :{
Streetwise, it is ( now ) no secret, but when the story first broke, O-250 had to retract part of their story, and remove one of my posts, because the Fuzz did not want the word getting out about their new digs. It would be tough keeping it a secret for long anyway.
Caring Soul, where did you get the idea that all the cops were going to be in one building? My gosh, we can't have the city cops mingling with North Division, and those guys on 22nd? they are only the auntie gang you nit. ;>)
metalman.
metalman.
When more schools close due to a lack of enrollment, maybe our town can collect all the portables for the Mounties and stick 'em together like at the oil sands sites.
Only in a City where you are taxing the hell out of the Citizens, and business, could you ever consider spending $45 Million for a new police station, and $50 Million for a Performing Arts Centre.

This will be the third **New** Police station in the last 50 years. I doubt if you would find any other City in Canada that was so ignorant that it would build 3 new stations in 50 years, especially with a crime and population decline in the last 10 years.

Insofar as the PAC goes. Same mentality applies. Renovate the Playhouse Theatre for a few million and then tear it down. Make an excuse for not using Vanier Hall, and pretend the Civic Centre doesnt exist, and ignore Theatre Northwest and **Walla** you have an excuse for a new PAC Centre.

These dudes at City hall are beyond redemption.

Throw in the fiasco of the Cameron St., Bridge, the River Road upgrade, the Airport Runway expansion, and the proposed Boundry Road cut off, and you have enough material to put someone in a looney bin.
It's still too expensive. Why is the mator not concerned about the cost of this project.

We have a leaderless, dysfunctional City Council.

I voted for Rogers, and I am very disappointed with his performance.
Maybe the "Mayor" should be a "mator"
Let us not forget the paving of a 11klm trail that is a go to. We dont have sidewalks along our road and in some places barely an edge of road. And the city expects its tax paying citizens to be happy about this trail? DREAM ON!!
But we are getting a $100,000 a year communicator who will be communicating to us how well the City is doing and how happy we should be as citizens that all that money is being spent just for our good ...... spin, spin spin ....
