Prince George, B.C.- The snowfall warning remains in effect with Environment Canada saying the fresh snow will likely be followed by rain later today.
Since the storm started moving through the region around 2 this morning, Prince George has received about 10 centimetres of snow. “That snowfall will change to rain this afternoon” says Environment Canada Meteorologist Matt MacDonald. “There is a significant warm front moving into the region” says MacDonald “It has already started raining in Quesnel.” He says the temperatue will heat up to 12 tomorrow, although there will still be gusty winds and more rain.
Meantime, Prince George RCMP say the overnight snowfall has kept officers on the run since the start of their shift this morning because of vehicle crashes and vehicles sliding off the road into the ditch.
There was a high volume of calls to the Hart area of the City, officers were also busy at Peden Hill where truckers were having a tough time navigating the slope and had to pull over to chain up.
The City’s snow removal crews have been on the road since 8 this morning with:
· 6 sander-plough trucks
· 4 graders
· 3 loaders
· 3 sidewalk machines
“We’re given ‘er as best we can” says acting streets supervisor Mike McCallum.
McCallum says there was a sander-plough on night shift that managed a few areas when the storm hit.
The City of Prince George has issued an advisory asking drivers to use extra caution and to give the
Crews responding to the snow fall extra room. “We really appreciate those residents that have their vehicles properly equipped for winter and are operating them in a manner consistent with the current conditions” says Mayor Dan Rogers. “The City of Prince George thanks residents for their patience and cooperation”.
The snowfall was so significant in some areas of the province that a planned winter driving media event in Williams Lake had to be cancelled because of poor driving conditions.
