For anyone who may be interested the following is the link to an interesting article on deflation:

http://theautomaticearth.blogspot.com/2009/10/october-30-2009-interview-with.html
I was in Williams Lake on Wednesday and had 3 choices for gas: 97.9, 98.5, & 98.9. It's been this low for at least the last 3 weeks.
I find it interesting how Vancouver area has been getting the H1N1 virus shot all wee, and we won't see it until the 2 November.
And on the news this morning they are moaning and groaning about thow they are running out already...
so does that mean we won't be getting it until all the Vancouverites have their fill?
Thought it was supposed to go to remote areas first....didnt' think the Vancouver area was all that remote...guess I was wrong...
I know the health board is saying they will start here next week, but will they?
The new 9.5 million dollar intersection at Domano Blvd. and Highway 16, seems, for the most part to be completed. Very nice job! Now, can we get the traffic light sensors working. Right now, we have to wait for the full cycle of traffic lights. Why??? The wait time is ridiculous there!! If you want to encourage people not to run red lights, you should set the lights up properly. Come on now, isn't it time to put these traffic lights into proper working order don't you think???
Been in Vernon again this past week.

I'm AMAZED at how many people actually use their recycling program. It's mandatory in that they have to pay for it (it's part of their utility bill) The thing is they don't actually have to put any recycling out but they sure use it.

The attitude seems to be, if we're paying for it then why not at least use it. Hats off to them.

The other thing I noticed in Vernon is that early each morning there are city workers out in the downtown core cleaning up the sidewalks. And this happens EVERYDAY excluding Sundays (I think).

It's a real treat to see that.

Couldn't agree more samiam. Hopefully they fix the lights there soon. The intersection looks good.
If the Vancouverites are getting the vaccine first, maybe it has to do with the olympics, naw.
I am concerned about a piece of news early in the week that Global did. It was about 50 thousand farmed salmon accidentally released. There has not been anything else mentioned about this. Why? I would really like to know what the result of this stupidity is going to be. How is this going to affect our REAL salmon? Why also has this been hushed up? Why the hell are these farms not inland? Now look what we have. I tried to smoke farmed salmon and after 3 days in the smoker it still had not dried. I put it into bags and the next day there was 2 inches of oil on the bottom. This fish is not healthy or even remotely comparable to our REAL salmon. The thought that this stupid mistake by humans could decimate our natural salmon angers me.
How did the roundabout do with the first snowfall?

I was impressed with drivers coming down the hart on the first snowfall, every one behaved and went at the right speed, no speed demons. No issue at except for what mother nature through at us.

They just spent $9.5 million on the college heights intersection and forgot to address the issue of it being a steep road that often gets snowed in. Too funny!
Hey CaringSoul, check out:
http://www.adopt-a-fry.org/
if you're interested in joining the fight to save our wild salmon stocks.
I dont think there should be to much for issues with the roundabout for drivers in the winter, the big issue is going to be the damage done by snow clearing, it is going to get the crap chewed out of it.

As for lights being set up properly, try going through the BCR, those lights are not set up either, no traffic coming any direction, but you get to sit there, and sit there, and sit there, and sit there .......
What I find most irking about this latest study that they are portraying as "news" is that IPG exists to produce this glossy crap and fancy Powerpoint presentations...which tell us absolutely nothing we don't already know and costs us over a million bucks a year in taxpayer dollars. They haven't done a damn thing to add value to our economy. Promoted the fall-flat Horizon Air fiasco with bogus market research, continue to beat a dead horse with the airport expansion, continue to beat a dead horse about empty container traffic that does nothing but roll through town and creates no new jobs, spent money dropping flyers in Washington State (as though cold-calling with mail inserts is going to induce any US tourists to venture beyond the golf courses of Vancouver and the Okanagan), etc, etc.

We don't need a million-dollar-a-year mouthpiece to let American tourists know that PG is en route to Alaska...they will discover that for themselves and spend money here as they see fit. We don't need a million-dollar-a-year mouthpiece to let any of CN's international customers know that their containers will be rolling through a few 75,000 population cities on their way from Rupert to Chicago. And we sure as hell don't need a million-dollar-a-year mouthpiece to regurgitate federal employment stats and housing start stats and try to spin them into a positive light every month for the local media...or to commission ridiculous "studies" like this one (that serve only to let the ONE person who's been living under a rock for the past 10 years know that "times-they-are-a-changin'" in the forestry sector).

The City could find a 20-year-old college marketing grad to produce the same pap as IPG each year for about 100-grand all in (wages, benefits, paper & ink)...and as he/she presumably wouldn't be tainted by the "old boys club" politics of this town it would probably come with more objectivity and credibility for that price!!
Let's set the record straight regarding the high school being closed in Kitimat!!

The ASSUMPTION that is was closed due to swine flu is DISINFORMATION.

There was a 40% absence rate at that school. Some have given the reason as they have flu LIKE symptoms. NOT ONE PERSON TO MY KNOWLEDGE HAS ACTUALLY BEEN TESTED TO CONFIRM THIS.
Of course, they won't be tested unless their symptoms become serious enough to warrant a hospital visit, they WILL NOT be tested.
So, keep things in the PROPER PERSPECTIVE.

On a happy note: HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE HALLOWEEN WEEKEND EVERYBODY!
Farmed atlantic Salmon are not a threat to wild salmon. Farmed salmon do not survive in the wild. There has been no documented case of farmed salmon taking hold in the wild. In the early nineteen hundreds over 8 million atlantic salmon where released into the wild on purpose to boost salmon fishing but they ever took hold.

Yes farmed salmon have more oil and that is what makes them so good on the barbi and I have seen no problem smoking them. Also because of more oil they have more omega three than wild.

Wild salmon stocks are down all over the coast not just where there are farms. Some of the biggest pink runs in history have happened right in the middle of farmed areas.

Farmed salmon is one of the most efficient ways of producing protein, less food required per pound of protein. More efficient than cattle, pigs, chickens or whatever.

Found this on another site. Somebody try & shoot it down.

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation..

5. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
The issue is sea lice seamutt; salmon farming is indeed a large threat to our native species.
4. And if one train leaves Halifax at 11 AM local time traveling at 30kms/hour, and another train leaves Vancouver......
Many of you have heard our beloved Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, do a cover of the Beatles classic, "I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends." And I'm sure you realize much of what Lennon and McCartney wrote is the antithesis of what Harper believes. However if Harper is going retro, (some say he always was) then he needs a song for the flip side of the single he is to release. Here are some suggestions for that song: "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Back in the USSR", "Happiness is a Warm Gun", " Why Don't We Do It In The Road", "Everybody Got's Something to Hide", "Helter Skelter", "Revolution # 1", "Revolution # 9", "Too Much Monkey Business", "I'm A Loser", Love These Goon Shows', "A Day in the Life", "Nowhere Man", "Can't Buy Me Love" or "Let It Be." However, maybe he'll do a duet with Maxime Bernier singing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."

Here's a free idea for IPG.

I was downtown last weekend and needed a bit to eat. I quickly realized that within a 5 minute walking radius, there were over 10 restaurants to choose from. Why don't those restaurants or IPG come up with a marketing plan like "Food PG" or "Dine Out Downtown", or "PG Eats".

Am I being too logical? What is missing?
am with eatsbushesleavesetc.. Pretty hard to shoot down. Could you maybe forward that to the federal NDP mheadquarters? It might enlighten them to the flaw in their policy.
The thing that is missing is that this is not what IPG typically does.

In the first instance, there is a BC restaurant association with 26 member restaurants in PG according to their web site. There used to be a PG chapter but am not too sure if it still exists.

http://www.bcrfa.com/index.php?module=Website&action=SearchDirectory&content=1127780217265-6691

If this does not get results from the restaurants which are scattered all over the city, then Downtown Prince George should be able to help.

The reason I say that is because I think industry should take care of itself first of all. IPG might want ot step in to encourage them to do that.

As far as ythe eour experience goes, I was doing a similar walk a few weeks ago and had a hard time finding a quick snack place open after 6pm. Luckily I remember Wasabi Sushi. It is one of the few places open in the centre of downtown where one can have a decent meal at a reasonable price and be finished in 20 to 30 minutes.

They are open till 9pm and seem to be doing a pretty good business while others before them did not.
EBS&L wrote: "somebody try & shoot it down."

Now there is an easy challenge if I ever saw one.

The original statements are attributed, btw, to Boetcker in 1942. He was a Presbyterian minister. It seems Lincoln was also considered the likely source of some of them. The original statements were statements from liberal thinkers. The version that is now in vogue is all over the internet on right wing blogs and are aberrations, to put it mildly, of the originals.
-----------------------
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

The orginal was: "You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich."

The original makes a lot of sense. What is important to note is that it goes to how you CANNOT help the poor, and is silent on how you CAN help the poor. Thsu, it is not a call to action, but promotes inaction.

The new one about using legislation is actually wrong, in my opinion. There are several countries that have various laws which assist the poor and use the wealth of the country to do so through various social safety nets that makes our look archaic. They are mainly in Europe and they are some of the most advanced countries in the world. For decades people have been saying that it would not work because it would take the incentive to work away from those who are better off. That has not happened in practice.
------------------------

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

Let us look at children. That is true for them, isn't it? Children used to have to work and still do in some countries. I suppose the promoters of that think we should put them all back into the mines.

So how about those who are 65+? Had a minimum wage type of life. Could have worked their fingers to the bones because they were simply not able to get proper schooling and now have to live on welfare since the old age security amount in this country is a joke.

The thinking is, it is not a matter of whether the statement is true, it is a matter of whether there are some people in our society that cannot work and earn money to the level others can. It becomes a matter of deciding whether to help anyone at all, and, once we have established that we will help some, how do we decide who that will be and how we will be of the best assistance.

----------------
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

Same thoughts all over again, just rephrased.

----------------------------------
4. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Already discussed that with respect to Europe, especially Scandinavian countries. That is a statement tht might be true in some countries and not true in others. It goes to philospohy, ethics, religion, connection to the community, etc. etc. If those connections are strong, then the community giving in one form or another will be strong..

These words are often attributed to Abraham Lincoln, but according to the book They Never Said it: A Book of Fake Quotes, Misquotes, & Misleading Attributions, they are not from Lincoln.

The quotes were published in 1942 by William J. H. Boetcker, a Presbyterian minister. He released a pamphlet titled Lincoln On Limitations, which did include a Lincoln quote, but also added 10 statements written by Boetcker himself.

They were:

1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong
3. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
4. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
5. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.
6. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
7. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
8. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
9. You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
10 You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they will not do for themselves.
Things must be pretty good around town this week because the Friday Free For All isnt packing much bite.
Shall I rev them up for you?
I am quite good at that.
How 'bout I completely ruin it....

Gas prices. Discuss.

Logging out now.
How about them Cougars ...............
Faxman farmed fish get sea lice from wild fish.
Gas is priceless .....
Cougars leave trax in the snow ... not on the ice ....
So what is the latest rumour about the PG Hotel?

Has there been a sale?

I hear the City has bought it and is giving the Heritage Commission money to preserve it for a new downtown museum.

On the international scene I heard on the radio this AM that Pres. Obama has lifted the gates for HIV infected people to come and go to and fro the good ol' US of A. In a few weeks I look forward to see how the Immigration department down there reacts to an influx of lotsa Haitian boat people. I bet they are now gathering up anything that floats in Haiti. Cubans use to be let in more easily than Haitians. Should be interesting, to say the least.

Is there a difference between a person who receives welfare, and a Government Worker who is paid $65,000.00 per year plus benefits for a pseudo job, that in reality is not needed, and is non productive.??

I suggest to you that the high paid Government Worker is just a high paid, thinly disquised welfare receipient.

Have a nice day.

***I think myself that we have more machinery of Government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labour of the industrious***

Thomas Jefferson
Brilliant Gus.
"3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else."
----------------------------------------

Depends what "anything" actually is. If it's "money", then the statement is patently ridiculous.
and where would the government get that money?
To say that the government does not first take it from someone else is nieve in the very least.
In Canada, certain groups want our Government to make it legal for Men to have more than one wife. I don't have a problem with it as long as they are not taking children as their legal mistress because that's what is really going on. The certain groups that want this better be able to support their so called wives and children and not be useing our welfare system for their gratifacation. If our Government is stupid enough to allow this they better be prepared for women to have more than one Husband. If men can do it why can't women??
"Is there a difference between a person who receives welfare, and a Government Worker who is paid $65,000.00 per year plus benefits for a pseudo job"

For a pseudo job, probably not. For every other government related job, certainly there is. Of course, before we can really consider your statement and whether it is valid, we need you to define and provide examples of what you consider a "pseudo job".

I'll help you out. Pseudo is defined as not genuine or a sham. A sham can be further defined as something that is not what it is purported to be. What specific government jobs would fit this description? Teachers? Police officers? Firemen? Lawyers? Nurses? Doctors (may as well throw them in since they are directly funded by the government)? The guys that clean the swimming pools in town? Librarians? Clerks that do photocopying for council meetings? Scientists working at Health Canada? The people that manage the CPP?

Who exactly are you talking about and are you actually suggesting that these people don't do the job or perform the function they are being paid to do?
Loki. The following sentence is taken from a speech that Ben Bernanke (who is presently the Chairman of the United States Federal Reserve) made on Nov. 21, 2002.

"But the U.S. government has a technology, called a printing press (or, today, its electronic equivalent), that allows it to produce as many U.S. dollars as it wishes at essentially no cost."

http://www.federalreserve.gov/BOARDDOCS/SPEECHES/2002/20021121/default.htm
Palopu:-"Is there a difference between a person who receives welfare, and a Government Worker who is paid $65,000.00 per year plus benefits for a pseudo job, that in reality is not needed, and is non productive.??"
-----------------------------------------

No, not really, except in the size of the payment. But we should be careful not to tar all "Government Workers" with the same brush. Many, probably most, do not have 'pseudo-jobs', they are delivering services to the Public that ARE needed, and, likely as not, doing so just as productively as they would if their employer was private instead of public.

----------------------------------------

"I suggest to you that the high paid Government Worker is just a high paid, thinly disquised welfare receipient."
------------------------------------------

There seem to be a lot of "high paid" private sector "workers" in the same category, Palopu. Their "work" is not really needed, and is essentially non-productive, too. And is often carried on at a detriment to actual efficiency. And with the result of increased costs to the Consuming public.

Some, like some of their counterparts in government, are quite visible and obvious. But if we looked a little closer, we'd undoubtedly find this feature is far more widespread that most would ever imagine.

There is a whole "advertising" industry, for instance, that goes far beyond simply informing you of what's for sale, and is instead designed primarily to induce you to buy things you've been convinced by it you just have to have.

There are the tradesmen who know they can perfectly well do a job in a fraction of the time they often say it'll take to do it. But they want to "stretch the job out", to ensure they "get the day in" and can charge more for what they do than it's really worth.

We live in a world where the attitude all to often is that it's more profitable to "do" your customer, than to do sound and lasting work. It permeates the whole society.

"Planned obsolescence" in cars and household appliances is another manifestation of it.

But what should we expect in a society which is so focussed on "making work", and having "full employment", for 'moral' reasons in priority to 'economic' ones?

Loki:-"and where would the government get that money?
To say that the government does not first take it from someone else is nieve in the very least."
------------------------------------------
From whom did the government take the money FIRST that it needed to raise an Army, build a Navy, train and equip an Air Force, rapidly industrialise a largely 'agricultural' nation, and enter World War Two, Loki?

Couldn't have been the 'taxpayers', over a quarter of them were unemployed and flat broke all through the 'Dirty Thirties'. Most of the rest were just getting by, with precious little in 'savings'. And the pre-war "rich", from all accounts I've ever seen, certainly weren't any less 'rich' after War was declared.

The fact is, Loki, whether the power has been assigned, as it has been in Canada to the Bank of Canada, ALL sovereign nations are "self-financing" ~ they actually do have the power to "create money". They don't have to "take it" FIRST from anyone.
