Prince George, B.C. – October 2009 will go into the record books as cool and wet.
In his monthly report, Environment Canada Meteorologist Jim Steele says there were a couple of records broken in what turned out to be a very wintry October.
Here is his full report:
The month got off to a bit of a rough start with 6 cm of snow on the 1st, then conditions returned to more normal for early October with near normal temperatures and generally dry conditions.
The first real signs of winter arrived during the second week as arctic air plunged southwards through the province. This brought record cold temperatures for both the 11th and 12th. Temperatures moderated by mid month to near seasonal normal however this was accompanied by very unsettled conditions.
Precipitation was frequent and on some days quite heavy with over 10 mm of rain falling on the 21st, 25th and 20th. Not to be outdone, snow began to show up as well with significant amounts on the 25th, 29th and 30th.
In the end, the month was on the cool side with the mean temperatures just shy of 2 degrees below normal. On the precipitation side of things, it was wet and white with rainfall slightly above normal and snowfall way above the normal.
