Long Gun Bill A Long Time Coming

By Ben Meisner

It may have taken years but finally all political parties are beginning to recognize that the long gun registry has been a dismal failure. I say long guns because the registering of hand guns has been with us for more than 45 years. Similarly assault rifles have been on the restricted list but that hasn’t stopped the criminal’s of Canada from finding plenty of them.

For awhile, the registry was a means of gaining access to your home to have a look around and its feeble attempt to stop the spread of guns used in the commission of crimes was laughable.

The law abiding gun owners, basically those people who live in the rural sections of Canada, took the brunt of the registry. The proliferation of hand guns continued to expand at an alarming rate, and the use of assault weapons in crimes matched that pace.

In countries the world over were a gun registry has been put in place it has failed, and while there is an argument to be made that in the USA the acquisition of hand guns comes far too easy , the hunter has been targeted as the culprit.

The Private members bill of Tory MP Candice Hoeppner to kill the registry is a bold move and one that has been a long time coming.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion

I agree... this is a good thing. For the cost of the gun registry we coul have 4-laned a highway to the Pacific Ocean.
I agree that the gun registry in Canada was a waste of money. However, Singapore for one, is a country where any fire arm is illegal and believe me, no one has a gun there. The penalty if caught with one, the last time I was there, was death, the same as for those caught with drugs. FYI, Singapore is a safe and delightful city/country to visit.
Ya death for having a firearm, that seems about right. I think I'd prefer the freedoms in Canada.
They have wild bears, cougars and wolves in Singapore? Do they go hunting for either sport or to put meat on the table. No but what they do have is a justice system that actually punishes people for breaking the law. Caneing for littering or chewing gum or vandelism. More serious punishment for
more serious crime. My self I think that a justice system that actually punishes people for breaking the law is way better than gun registry.
This was just another attempt to pilfer the pockets of the person who lives by the law. If perhaps the so called justice system would be a little more harsh on these frickin criminals, instead of giving them a room , 3 squares, t.v., oh and give them H1N1 shots before anyone else had access to them. Most of these idiots have no problem going back to prison, it is a vacation for them. And on our dime as well.
I am laughing on the outside only. One ought to look a little deeper into singapore law before touting it. You can be executed, for example, for having the keys to an apartment which contains a pound of weed... Or for having a gun during some other crime like: vandalism or....wait for it....unlawful assembly.
I registered my guns, I dont have a huge problem with the idea of the registry EXCEPT for its possible use as a way around our rights regarding illegal search and seizure. I am not crying at the elimination of the registry however. It seems to me that the registry was a tacit acceptance of increased limitations on gun ownership. Only a step or two from there to making gun ownership a priviledge rather than a right.

Let's not jump the gun, the end of the gun registry is still a long way off. This was only the first step
A friend once told me that if you are standing at a street corner in Singapore and someone sticks a gun in your ribs and robs you, there is no point in calling the Police, because they are the only ones with the guns.

One thing that Canada has is its freedoms. No one in this Country should be supporting a Government that wants to keep restricting them.

God knows they keep trying. Especially those dudes in Victoria, and of course the Idling Police in Prince George.
