'Tis the Season For Candle Fires
By 250 News
Candles are a decorating staple over the holidays, but BCAA Insurance is warning homeowners to take care when 'lighting up' for their festivities.
BCAA Claims Manager Graham Haigh says there has been a significant increase in the number of candle-related fire claims over the past few years. And Haigh says the average claim comes in at about $60,000.00.
He says, "Candles are no longer used for the occasional dinner party or power loss. Candle sales are booming and families are lighting candles in various rooms -- from bedrooms to bathrooms -- to achieve relaxation and mood-enhancing aromas."
"Many people don't realize how quickly something can go wrong and how severe the consequences can be," says Haigh.
To reduce the risk of a fire from candles occurring in your home, BCAA recommends you take the following precautions:
-- place burning candles at least one metre from anything combustible, from windows, and from where they might be knocked over
-- never leave a child or pet unattended in a room with a burning candle
-- avoid using plastic or wooden candle holders which can easily catch fire
-- never go to bed with candles still burning
-- ensure you have a multi-purpose dry chemical fire extinguisher in your home.
