Prince George, B.C.- The 24 year old man shot by an RCMP officer in Smithers on Saturday is recovering from his wounds.

The male was shot  when an officer with the Smithers Detachment tried to remove him from a truck that had been reported stolen from Houston.    The official release from the RCMP says the officer (who has 5 years experience with the RCMP) was trying to remove the driver from the vehicle when the vehicle accelerated.   The officer was in danger of being dragged, and fired his gun.

The 24 year old who was shot was initially taken to hospital in Smithers, but was soon transferred to Vancouver, his name has not been released.

The investigation into the shooting is being lead by a senior office from the Saanich Police Department. The Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP has an independent observer monitoring the investigation. The civilian Independent Observer assesses the impartiality of the RCMP team conducting the investigation. Factors that may be used to assess impartiality include the relative rank of the investigator or whether the member of the investigative team has ever:

·        worked with or been stationed at the same detachment with any RCMP member who is the subject of the investigation;
·        had a social relationship or social interaction with any RCMP member who is the subject of the investigation;
·        attended training at Depot (troopmate) during the same period with any RCMP member who is the subject of the investigation; or
·        been stationed or has worked at the detachment in which the investigation is taking place.

Don't know all the circumstances, but pulling that trigger is a decision maker. I think the RCMP needed to protect himself first, and then the public interest second.

Thumbs up to the RCMP with the information presented.
First report on here as well as other media was:

"According to police, while attempting to remove the driver from the truck, the vehicle accelerated DRAGGING the officer."

Second report on here as well as other media quoted the police as saying "While attempting to remove the driver of the truck the vehicle accelerated DRAGGING the officer. The officer discharged his firearm and the driver was struck."

This report now says:
"The official release from the RCMP says the officer (who has 5 years experience with the RCMP) was trying to remove the driver from the vehicle when the vehicle accelerated. The officer was IN DANGER OF BEING DRAGGED, and fired his gun."

Which is it?
We'll never know. Without a video there will be a whitewashed story. Sad when we can't believe our police officers.
The bottom line is the idiot was driving a stolen truck - that would tell me that he is a thief and he therefore takes the risk of being shot when being arrested. DUH! He got what he deserved - too bad we have to pay for all his medical care now though.
How do you know it was stolen?

If it was stolen, how do you know he stole it?

Not one report I have seen has followed this up from the Houston side. In other words:

1. who called it in
2. how did the caller know it was stolen (was it the callers truck and the caller observed it as it was being stolen, for example?)
3. the term used was that they stopped a truck fitting the description .... they did not say that they stopped the truck with the license plate that was given.

It is wonderful that there are so many people who know these things that, when asked, they really do not.

Sure hope I don't get mistakingly accused of something. There is a great big lynch mob out there.
I agree toolittletoolate.

This man is not a victim.
I agree fully toolittletoolate!

The RCMP can check plates (on the go) against a central registry of stolen vehicles, nobody had to call in.

This is the communications age after all!

If he was indeed driving a vehicle that did not belong to him he should have cooperated with the orders of the RCMP instead of trying to make a Bonnie & Clyde style getaway!

He should get a bill for every expense that was incurred after that: Hospital bills, a bill for the ambulance flight to Vancouver, the extra time and travel expenses of the RCMP....etc, etc.

He asked for trouble and he got it! How on earth can a 24 year old be so stupid?
Gus, why stop there?

How do we know the guy who pulled the trigger was really a cop? How do we know there was a truck involved? Maybe this whole story was made up? If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one to hear it, does it still make a sound?

So many questions...

What most have heard or seen with the media is from police reports. I was listening to the scanner several hours after the incident calling officers in for a briefing. Why? Go figure it.
This report now says:
"The official release from the RCMP says the officer (who has 5 years experience with the RCMP) was trying to remove the driver from the vehicle when the vehicle accelerated. The officer was IN DANGER OF BEING DRAGGED, and fired his gun."

Good catch Gus
"The officer was in danger of being dragged".

Well say no more, that's good enough for me.
The puke thief was accelerating and trying to get away from the law. The officer was doing his job. A dangerous one at that.

All you bleeding hearts can send flowers to the hospital if you want. I am just happy that the officer wasn't injured protecting some ones property. Maybe the next lowlife that wants to steal a truck will think twice.

I'd like to add my own thoughts as to what most likely happened in this story...oh wait a minute my name isn't Paul.

Glad nobody was killed, both sides. I'm sure both families agree. Now let's sit back and wait for more details from the witnesses then decide if he deserves flowers or not.
A thief does not deserve flowers.
I would not want the job the cops have to do. They are sworn to protect, and they have to make a lot of on the spot judgements both for their own safety and for everyone else. There are so many low life scum bag thieves, drug dealers, perverts and addicts out there, it is downright scary. Look at all the firearms the fuzz have confiscated lately, a lot of the pukes are armed, and the cops have to deal with that, the guy in the stolen truck could have been planning to shoot the cop. He did not know what to expect when approaching the drivers door, the scene could have gone down a hundred different ways. My money says that the cop is in the right, and the barfbag deserved to be shot. Someone else said 'we will never know' well that is the only truth we will ever know for sure. The cops will investigate, and they have made a show of bringing in a supposedly
un-biased 'member' to investigate. I am sure we will hear a sanitized spin on the events that took place, and I am also sure that the guilty one will stand up in court and lie his pants off.
Truth: R.I.P.
metalman.
"...was trying to remove the driver from the vehicle when the vehicle accelerated."

Why would an officer try to remove the driver when the vehicle is idling? Or is this one of those "smart" cars that just take off on their own?
Wow, commoner!! You put the obvious so clearly!!
