Prince George, B.C.- There is an effort underway to avert a CN engineers strike that’s set to start tomorrow morning.

Federal mediators have called a meeting for today with CN and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference .

CN said it would attend the session in Montreal, however it was not immediately known if the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference union would attend.

CN has asked the union to resume negotiations and says it would rather see talks go into arbitration than go through a strike.

The 1700 Engineers  are set to take to the picket line one minute after midnight tonight.

I wonder how long the sawmills could keep operating if CN stops running. Crossing my fingers they find a resolution.
one strike after another....courts should just outlaw unions.

They are terrorists taking the average joe hostage!!!
Wavoes your amazing. Must be an emplorer who pays peanuts.
Typical union mentality seamutt. You are owed a job and dont have to do anything for it.

you have no idea seamutt...you think only business owners are affected by unions. give your head a shake!!!

I am not a union supporter but I side with them big time on this front.
CN treats the union the same way they treat all of their employees & customers : like dung.
If employers were honest, fair people then there would be no need for unions; but why waste pearls on pigs!
The big issue is that CN wants to tack on 300 extra miles to the engineers monthly cap of 3800 miles. This increase is immaterial to the long haul engineers in Northern Ontario or the prairies, but to the engineers in southern Ontario, Quebec etc, this translates to a reduction in days off or worse, increasing hours worked. CN, since becoming a private company must make investor gains. This comes at the expense of things like enginuity and ,er, safety. Remember that when 1000s of tons of traffic barrel thru your neighbourhood at 50 mph. CN is in the business of making money PERIOD. During this strike (if it happens) they will be using managers to run trains. The law says the max that an engineer can be on shift is 12 hours. They will lie to Transport Canada about their hours. After all, can 300 managers take place of 1700 engineers and maintain service?
Perfect way to put it, Denaljo!!!

The crap I have to go through and still have a union to back me, I could not imagine if it were not there......

Oh no I think they are watching now.... I have to go!
pgdealer, wavoes you seem to have no idea what kind of a mess it would be without unions. Check history, and if you think history would not return without unions you should check what you are smokin.
As to what lomailey was saying and most people don't understand is that CN is forcing the Engineers as of November 28th to take a deal without negotiations that would cause them to work non-stop without out days off to make their miles for the month.
In a nutshell for all of you that work 5 days a week with 2 days off, try to imagine working 7 days a week at all hours of the day and night to make miles that your obligated to meet before your allowed time off. Which won't happen so all this money that these Engineers are making should help them pay for those lawyer fee's that they'll be paying for all those divorces.
This stike is about the Engineers families and the lifestyle they have to lead.
In a nutshell ,Denaljo , you said it perfecly. But in some cases the unions have overstepped their bounds but I would not like to see what would happen with out unions.
Actually CN made three different offers, and the union rejected all of them.
Has anybody checked BC Labour laws lately? Unions had their time but the labour laws are now in place to protect the worker. Union workers are actually treated worse now because the companies know how much money they are bleeding out of them so they give the bare minimum. Try excelling in a non-union position and see how well you are treated by your employer. You will be far more successful than hiding behind a union complaining about how tough you have it.
It is not called BC Labour Law anymore ; but rather it is called "Employer Labour Law"
All you UNION bashers, take note!! Do you have a government medical plan to protect your sorry you know what, when you get sick? Are you covered by Worker's Compensation when you get injured on the job? Is your wage based on union wages? Do you have a Pension Plan, even it is only CPP? Do you know why minimum wage is where it is now(it should be much higher), but without UNION's, it would be a lot less)? Do you know that organized labour fights all the time for an increase in minimum wage? Do you know, that most of the big buildings you work in, are built by experienced, trained, trades people? People that have served an apprenticeship, and passed Provincial exams, as well as Federal qualifications. This is all because of UNION's. Union workers have brought a lot to this country over the years. Things that have benefitted everybody, not just the UNION WORKERS!

So when you are busy bashing the UNIONS, I hope your medicare is in good shape. And while you're at it, open up your EYES! If you hate Union's so much, I suggest you stop paying into pension plans. Tell employers you are not interested in WCB coverage, and you will work for $2.00 per hour or less.

You don't like those terms?? Then go on strike, and make it better!!

Now, more than ever, we need the organized labour movement to go after this corrupt Government we have to deal with. And we need to give them our support. If you don't want to, that is your choice. It's a "Free Country" thing! But watch how free we will be when these criminals are done with our bank accounts, tearing up our medicare plan, and distroying the union agreement that were signed by all parties involved.

Give up your GUN's everyone, because that is what they want us all to do. To make us a people that can't defend ourselves against a corrupt GOVERNMENT!! They will never break my defense against bad Government, NEVER!!
Thanks for that same old pro-union rhetoric once again sam.
didn't expect much more of a comment like that from you MrPG. You strike me as a very self centered person! It's not always your way!!
