Victoria, B.C.- The latest information on H1N1 in B.C. says there have been 93 new severe cases of H1N1 identified in B.C. since November 24th. Those cases include five new severe cases in the Northern Health region, nine in Fraser Health, 13 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 21 in Interior Health, and 45 on Vancouver Island. The number of new severe cases is down from the previous week, when 109 new severe cases had been reported.
There have been eight new deaths over the past week, including two in Interior Health, four in Fraser Health and two on Vancouver Island.
Provincial Health Officer , Dr.Perry Kendall says although the number of new severe cases of H1N1 continues to drop, don't be fooled into thinking the virus will disappear. He says it is still in a person's best interests to get vaccinated unless they have already had a lab confirmed case of H1N1.
There have been 175 adverse reactions to the vaccine in B.C. and while most of those are considered mild, there have been 14 cases of serious events which include 4 anaphylaxis reactions. There has also been one death, but Dr.Kendall says the person was ill with H1N1 and had underlying health conditions. Nationwide, there have been 1700 adverse reactions to the vaccine.
With 635 thousand doses of vaccine delivered to clinics and physician offices over the past couple of days and a further 753 thousand doses to be delivered to B.C. later this week, Dr. Kendall says there are hopes 66% of the population will be vaccinated.
