Prince George, B.C.-  With $122 million dollars in funding available for Green Transition  from the   Federal  Government,  Canfor Pulp Limited Partnership (CPLP) is working  towards moving  forward on  projects  that will benefit the environment and  the Prince George airshed.

Brett Robinson, Vice President of Operations, says   the four projects will reduce particulate and odour emissions from their operations in Prince George and will ensure the viability of the pulp operations.

Speaking on the Meisner program this morning on CFISFM Robinson says they have started preparing for the work involved in the four projects “This program has really allowed us to speed up programs we already had in our plan, but I’m sure you can appreciate, its actually difficult to spend this level of capital so quickly so we have to be very thoughtful and methodical on how we approach it.  We’ve put other things on hold while we redirect our people towards these big projects.   We actually finished a significant reorganization last week and moved some of our strongest resources (people) into the areas that are   going to have the challenges of spending some of this capital.”

The projects have to be completed by the end of March 2012 in order to qualify for the funding.

The four projects are:

PG Pulp mill Odour reduction: $10 million

PG- Intercon:   Increased biofuel power generation $10 million

PG Pulp : Green energy  generation and particulate  reduction $30million

Northwood Pulp – recovery Boiler Upgrade  $100 million.

Thank you Feds, Thank you Canfor for thinking of our future.

It is good for everyone in PG.

Good luck.
Its really good for us when you use tax dollars to shore up industry. What has happened to the profits over the years.,

These guys are corporate bums pure and simple. What about the Husky refinery? are they also waitng for tax dollars to clean up the air in the City

We have done study after study and guess what here they are doing air samples in the residential area and we stand and cheer.

How much more stupid can it get.
Cheers
Sounds like good news to me. Way to go!
Okay this is really good for Prince George! But lets not fool ourselves into thinking Canfor and the Government are doing this. The money they got was ultimately taxl payer dollars therefor THE TAX PAYERS ARE DOING THIS FOR US. Thank you to the tax payers.
Well I would rather my money go towards something like this rather than the Olympics or a new roof on the BC place Stadium.
I agree Mercenary. This will help keep the jobs at those mills in PG which means more money for everyone in PG. The Olympics...how much more stupid can that get!
I wonder what people are thinking when they say this is a 'waste of our tax money'.

Our city is FINALLY getting some of the tax money back that we send to Ottawa. For these projects we're getting back $120 million *MORE* then what our share was.

So would you rather have that $122 million go to help out the auto industry in Ontario?

How about $122 million to Quebec for their industry?

Better yet, how about we keep that $122 million in PRINCE GEORGE and improve our air quality, keep our workers employed, making more then retail wages?

How about we keep our industry going?

How about we thank CPLP for paying yet more in TAXES ($133 million in new construction)?

Sheesh.

Get a grip.
If you'll kindly pay attention to the specifics, it states above that approximately 40 million goes toward power generation, with perhaps an inkling of that toward particulate reduction. Fails to mention what proportion is to be allocated to the particulate reduction. But power generation is profitable if the buyer, BC Hydro will accommodate.

Environmentally a $100 million recovery boiler upgrade is just that, for that matter a replacement for aged equipment, again perhaps efficiency may be the issue.

The $33 million dollar black liquor credit accrued by West Frasers' Eurocan mill didn't help that mill, it in turn will be invested in Quesnel to possibly generate power.

Nonetheless it is taxpayers money that are providing benefits to shoulder rubbing corporations. Certainly a bonus for PG, for myself it will result in unemployment.

In February if not before it will become evident how our government caters to the big players, for good or bad. Our Forest Minister has done well, he has provided for his constituents, as for west of PG or further North, his most recent comments regarding Eurocan all but prove he isn't interested, but wish us luck.

Thank you and Happy Holidays.
It's still good news, pisspulper, the money is being spent here, the governments at all levels are notorious for wasting money, at least a little more is coming back to good old PG.
metalman.
I just hope that the people here can handle that money so that it is transparent to the citizens here. The tax payers have a right to make sure these monies go to EXACTLY how they are intended. I do not believe that Canfor should go unchecked. We need to insure that this money IS spent here. We need to watch the money trail. This money ultimately came from the tax payers and this time it needs to benefit them. :} Saying all this does not mean I know exactly how to get this done. Any suggestions?
Yes, this is the taxpayers money. Isn't it good news that it is being spent here and not........Ontario??
So the moral of the story is... "Corporate welfare is bad... unless it's a local corporation."
The money is a result of the so called black liquor subsidy in the USA. The $122 Million is supposedly to offset the US competition, and is to be spent on pulp mill improvements.

Of course its taxpayers money, if it wasnt we wouldnt be discussing it.

Of course we have no control over how the money is to be spent. Why would we???

What we have here is craven politics, nothing more and nothing less.

Anyone who thinks that Joe public will have any accounting of this money, better go and get a head check.
From the Federal Government? Guess where they get their money from?

I believe that any Government stimulus money spend should be to create jobs that provide value by way of a product or a service that others are willing to pay for.

Otherwise, all we have is a work project with no value produced and no real net revenue generated.
With the upgrades, the mills will continue to be viable, and more environmentally friendly. This will keep good paying jobs in PG and the spinoff effects will help everybody in this town. I do not see a downside here.
